Chelsea: 3 Players Who Will Have a Breakout Season
If Jose Mourinho is to be believed, Chelsea are almost done with their activity in the summer transfer market. The Chelsea boss claims that, having already signed Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel and Mark Schwarzer, Wayne Rooney is the last and only remaining target on the club's summer transfer list.
What this means is that, whether Rooney will be wearing blue or not, we can expect to see a couple of players step up and make an impact this season.
Here are three Chelsea players who could have a breakout season.
Although last season was arguably Romelu Lukaku's breakout season in the Premier League, this year he is back at Stamford Bridge, and this could be his breakout season for the Blues.
Much depends on whether or not Wayne Rooney comes to Chelsea, but if he doesn't, Lukaku is well placed to become the Blues' main striker. Since he moved to the club, people have been comparing him to Didier Drogba, but Lukaku has all the makings to become an even better player. He is a physical presence like Drogba but is perhaps more skilled on the ball.
Even if Rooney does make the move south, there is no reason to think that Lukaku won't be an important feature in the Chelsea set-up this season. And if they can both find form together, they might just be a formidable team.
Marco van Ginkel
Of the three new Chelsea players, Marco van Ginkel is by far the lesser known. The 20-year-old Dutch midfielder has shown a lot of promise for his former club Vitesse, and could be just the player that Jose Mourinho needs in his midfield.
Chelsea's midfield is already packed full of talent, but Van Ginkel's versatility means that he will be a valuable squad player. More than this, however, he might even have the ability to make the central defensive midfield position his own. Jon Obi Mikel is currently the only player that consistently fills that role, and Van Ginkel might be the man to give him a run for his money.
Kevin de Bruyne
Will this finally be Kevin de Bruyne's breakout season for Chelsea?
After a good season on loan with Werder Bremen, De Bruyne is back with Chelsea, and already making an impact in preseason. Although he picked up an injury in Chelsea's recent friendly against a Malaysia XI, the club has already said that it is not a serious one.
Although we can try to learn what we can from preseason, it is hard to know who will be the difference this year until the first kick of a ball in August.
So, who do you think will have a breakout season for the Blues this year? Let us know in the comments.
