Pitching Matchups 5/8/09
Here's a list of today's pitching matchups along with a short blurb for each providing insight on whether each starter will be throwing smoke or getting smoked.

Jo Jo Reyes at PHI: 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA career vs Philadelphia.
Final Decision: Strong Bench
Cole Hamels vs ATL: Hasn't pitched since April 28th, and hasn't gone more than 4.1 innings since April 17th. With Mccann back in the Braves lineup, expect a boost in morale for Atlanta. Final Decision: Mediocre Bench

CC Sabathia at BAL: Career 5-1 vs Orioles with 3.01 ERA. Expect him to get it on track now that hes out of April.
Final Decision: Strong Start
Jeremy Guthrie vs NYY: Nuff' said. He should be riding your bench tonight.
Final Decision: Strong Bench

J. Kartsens at NYM: ERA over 5.80 on the season against a clicking NYM offense.
Final Decision: Strong Bench
J. Niese vs PIT: 6.55 ERA in 5 Triple A games this season. The fact that he is fighting for a rotation spot helps his cause, but his 1.69 WHIP just about evens that out.
Final Decision: Mediocre Bench

J Verlander at CLE: 5-10 vs CLE all time with an awful ERA on the road this season.
Final Decision: Strong Bench
C Lee at DET: 2.57 ERA at home this season.
Final Decision: Mediocre Start

J Pineiro at CIN: If youre in a league that counts strikeouts, no point in starting him. No more than 2 ER in his last 3 starts.
Final Decision: K-Leagues: Mediocre Start, Non K Leagues: Strong Start
J Cueto vs STL: Not great at home, STL offense running on all cylinders right now , expect a mediocre performance at best.
Final Decision: Bench

J Shields at BOS: Matchup data very neutral.
Final Decision: Eh Start
B Penny vs TB: Not good vs TB or at home this year.
Final Decision: Bench

W Rodriguez at SD: On a tear as of late; against a poor SD lineup
Final Decision: Start
C Gaudin vs HOU: Nuff Said. Bench him. Even if he has a good start, you couldn't have called it.
Final Decision: Bench

C Jakubauskas at MIN: Not enough info on this guy to make an arguement to start. Too erratic as of late
Final Decision: Bench
S Baker vs SEA: Ugly as of late, didn't pitch well against SEA last year.
Final Decision: Strong Bench

R Wells at MIL: 2.77 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP at triple A this year. If you got no one else, he's worth the shot.
Final Decision: Start (Only if absolutely needed)
D Bush vs CHC: Nice WHIP and K/BB this year; worth the start.
Final Decision: Eh Start

Matt Harrison vs CWS: Bench
J Contreras vs TEX: Bench

R Nolasco at COL: Ugly all year, pitching at Coors Field won't help.
Final Decision: Strong Bench
J Hammel vs FLA: Bench

S Richmond at OAK: Nothing short of stellar all year, expect that from him tonight.
Final Decision: Start
J Outman vs TOR: Who?
Final Decision: Bench. There's gotta be a better matchup for your team

S Martis at ARI: Somehow 3-0 on the season. I'm not sold. Start at your own risk.
Final Decision: Start*
Y Petit vs WAS: Just plain ugly as of late, but I have a gut feeling that he's due for a good start, but thats not enough to start him.
Final Decision: Bench*

G Meche at LAA: 8-2 Career vs LAA and great on the road this year.
Final Decision: Strong Start
M Palmer vs KC: Pitching to save his butt in the rotation while starters are coming off the DL. Expect him to be good tonight.
Final Decision: Start.

Barry Zito at LAD: Actually pitching pretty well this year. His off speed stuff is working. No Manny for LAD.
Final Decision: Start.
Chad Billingsley: Great all year. No way you can bench him now.
Final Decision: Strong Start.
