On July 10, 1999, Brandi Chastain set the new standard for celebrations for female athletes when her penalty kick in the Women's World Cup sealed the U.S. victory over China, causing her to whip her jersey off and fall to her knees with fists clenched.
As Chastain describes it, taking her jersey off was "momentary insanity, nothing more, nothing less. I wasn't thinking about anything. I thought, 'This is the greatest moment of my life on the soccer field.'"
The ensuing pictures landed her on the cover of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated and now serves as one of the most famous photos in the history of women's sports.
