Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Real Madrid Bid Could End Hopes of Getting Luis Suarez

Arsenal have a chance at acquiring one of the top scorers in the world, but Real Madrid could be getting in the way.

After Arsene Wenger launched a large bid for Luis Suarez, the Spanish club is ready to offer an even bigger one, according to Geoff Sweet of The Sun:

Real president Florentino Perez is set to offer Liverpool a whopping £40 million for the Uruguayan - just days after the Reds turned down a £30m bid from the Gunners...His agent Pere Guardiola met Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre on Monday to insist Suarez wants to join a club in the Champions League next season.

Suarez is a world-class talent as a forward, finishing second in the EPL with 23 goals in 33 matches for Liverpool this past season. He also showed off his ability for the Uruguay national team while tallying seven goals in eight World Cup qualifying matches.

However, these types of reports have been circulating since the end of the season to indicate his time at Anfield is nearly up. It is also clear that both Arsenal and Real Madrid will be ready to add the talented player.

The problem for the English club is that Real have a big advantage from the start. According to Sky Sports, Suarez previously stated that he wants to leave the EPL:

I love Liverpool, but if there is a chance of playing somewhere else...I suffered too much as a kid to get where I am to be attacked unfairly by the English press. They haven't appreciated me as a player, they've just judged my attitude.

I've talked to my agent, there's nothing concrete. To say no to Madrid would always be difficult and more so with the team they have.

These statements show that he is unlikely to leave Liverpool for another EPL club, and the chances are greater that he moves to La Liga.

Of course, Arsenal are not giving up on this one. The bid for £30 million shows that there is a clear interest from the club, and Suarez responded by saying, "It is good to know I am valued by teams like Arsenal," according to Sweet's report.

The problem is that this recent move by Real could end up being a death sentence for the Gunners' chances of completing the transfer.

Based on Wenger's history in the transfer process—combined with the large number of targets that the team is going after this summer—it's unlikely Arsenal would be able to greatly increase the original bid. Even if they do, it would be surprising if it tops £40 million.

With the La Liga club offering more money to Liverpool and Suarez more willing to go there, it seems like this is the most likely transfer destination for the forward.

However, there is a silver lining that could come from this. If the Uruguayan does move to Real Madrid, it would leave Gonzalo Higuain expendable enough to finally be moved. This could allow Arsenal to complete a deal for the striker.

The only thing clear is that Arsenal's chances of getting Suarez has taken a severe hit.
