Atlanta Braves Bandwagon Is Shrinking
As a child, I grew up in the Atlanta area watching well over 100 Braves games every summer, and going to scores more in person.
Now as a student at Florida State University, April and September are spent out of town with only television as my savior to catch Braves games. Suddenly, that too has been cut out.
TBS has dropped the Braves, and the network that used to broadcast nearly half of the team's games every season has left out-of-towners with a huge void in their sports lives. A channel called Peachtree TV has shouldered the load, and I guess I will learn what that station is all about when I return to Atlanta in two weeks.
Now the inability to watch my team is obviously just an excuse because in the age of the sports bar and the MLB Extra Innings Package, the Braves are still shown in Tallahassee. But poor college students have trouble seeing 162 games while having to pay for dinner as many as seven nights per week.
What does this mean for Braves Nation? A smaller fan base, and other teams picking up these wandering baseball fans.
One of the biggest selling points of the Braves in the 1990s was of course the spectacular run of division titles, but also that the team was regularly on national television with TBS broadcasts. These days, both selling points have all but disappeared and fans have begun to look elsewhere.
In Florida, from what I have seen, the newfound love of the Tampa Bay Rays have stolen many Braves fans. With more teams in the league now than in 1995, the Braves have several hurdles to overcome in order to attract fans.
When I return home in two weeks, I'm sure I will feel like my love for the Braves has never changed. But right now, like many bandwagoners, I find it hard to love a team that I can never see playing on television.
