Actress Elisha Cuthbert and Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf tried their best to pull off a quaint wedding. And they would have pulled it off if it weren't for those meddling fans.

In all seriousness, it sounds like the wedding between the hockey star and the Hollywood darling went off without a hitch.

Colin MacLean of The Journal Pioneer (h/t Ann Oldenburg of USA Today) reports on the small church affair between the 32-year-old actress and the 28-year-old Edmonton native.

Dion Phaneuf, captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, married actress Elisha Cuthbert in a little church on a hill in Summerfield, P.E.I. on Saturday.

Phaneuf and Cuthbert have been part-time Islanders for several years. He has strong family ties here and owns a summer home in New London; the couple has spent their summers here since they started dating.

A couple of images from the report point to a wedding completely counter to what you would think of as two well-known personalities walk down the aisle.

However, the report does mention there were a multitude of tour buses and fans who tried to grab a peek of the high-profile nuptials but managed to keep a safe and courteous distance from the actual proceedings.

It seems wedding season is in full gear because Jrue Holiday recently married soccer star Lauren Cheney with his fellow NBAers there for support, as per Jose Martinez of Complex Sports; Kerry Washington reportedly married Nnamdi Asomugha and WNBA star Monica Wright confirmed she is engaged to Kevin Durant

'Tis the season for open bars and gift registries it seems.

As for Phaneuf and Cuthbert, they kept the close-knit theme by welcoming 300 guests back to the Maple Leafs star's house, as per Cinya Burton of E!

A round of applause is in order for a happy couple who managed a marriage with a heaping dose of family and only a light sprinkle of fanfare.
