Newport, Rhode Island will play host to some of the top tennis players in the world this week, as the 2013 Hall of Fame Tennis Championships get underway.

Key Storyline: Isner Looking to win third in a row

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

John Isner has dominated at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships the last two years, winning the tournament in 2011 and 2012. This weekend, Isner will be looking to make it three straight championships at the historic tournament.

Will John Isner win his third straight title in Newport?

In 2011, Isner defeated Olivier Rochus in the final and didn’t drop a set throughout his entire run to the crown. Isner wasn’t perfect last year, but still came out on top against Lleyton Hewitt. In the last two years at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, Sergei Bubka has been the only player to win a set against Isner.

Isner is the No. 2 seed in this year’s tournament, as Sam Querrey is the top guy this week in Newport. But that doesn’t mean that Isner isn’t the favorite to win it all for a third time. He’ll be taking on Ryan Harrison in the first round and will definitely be tested by his fellow countryman.

Harrison got the best of Isner at the Apia International in Sydney in the first round earlier this year, when Isner was the top seed in the tournament. Isner would get his revenge on Harrison at the French Open, as he came back to win three straight sets after dropping the first two in the second round.

Isner recently retired from Wimbledon in the second round after experiencing pain in his left knee, according to the Associated Press (h/t USA Today). It will be interesting to see if an injury will derail his hopes of winning a third consecutive title at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
