SAN DIEGO - MAY 03: The 2009 rookie draft class of the San Diego Chargers (L-R) Guard Louis Vasquez #65, cornerback Brandon Hughes #36, linebacker Larry English #52, safety Kevin Ellison #25, defensive tackle Vaughn Martin #92, center Tyronne Green #69 and running back Gartrell Johnson #33 pose for a group photo during Chargers minicamp at the team's training facility on May 3, 2009 in San Diego, California. The San Diego Chargers 2009 draft class (see photo) includes a raw Canuck DE, Vaughn Martin, who has never played a down of American rules football.  Jamaican Canadian Vaughn (D.L.) Martin, see photo, is best known for an April 09 youtube clip,  "Chargers scout gets blown up", wherein the green rookie misunderstands the drill and pancakes the scout.  Martin also made a name for himself by making 32 reps (lifts) of 225lbs at Michigan's pro day, and running the 40 yard dash in under 5 seconds -- at 330 lbs.   Scouts and coaches remark on his nimble feet and King Kong like power.

Although a "project" for the Chargers, it is possible that Martin will get some playing time in his first season as a DE, and if he matures, eventually replace legend Jamal Williams at NT in the Chargers' long-establish 3-4 defense.  Worst case scenario in his first year: the practice squad -- although players with his upside can get snapped up by other teams.   Martin may be making noise sooner than many draft experts expect.  It was recently noted that Chargers have drafted more Pro Bowl players in the last ten years than any other team (www.chargers.com 5/6/09)

This is also Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera's first full year at the D helm, and he anticipates molding Martin into the Frankenstein monster his scheme needs.
