If not for Jake Scott's two interceptions, Fernandez would likely have been the MVP of Super Bowl VII, which capped off Miami's perfect 1972 season. He played the game of his life that day, recording 17 tackles and helping to control a potent Washington Redskins rushing attack. Fernandez was a key part of all three Super Bowl teams of the early 1970s but never appeared in a Pro Bowl. He was placed into the Dolphins' Walk of Fame at Sun Life Stadium in December of 2012.
