WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin silenced many of his critics tonight, scoring a devastating third round knockout over veteran middleweight contender Matthew Macklin.
In recent weeks the number of people willing to question the 31-year-old Kazakhs credentials as a middleweight sensation had seemingly swelled. He had never beaten a legitimate middleweight contender, and nobody knew how he'd react to getting hit clean were among the common criticisms.
All of that goes out the window with this performance.
Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO) simply overwhelmed Macklin (29-5, 20 KO) and ended the fight with an absolutely lethal left-hand body shot that crumpled his opponent to the canvas. The fight was over from the moment the shot landed as Macklin didn't even make an attempt to rise from the mat.
With the victory, Golovkin takes another huge leap forward to a possible showdown with recognized middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. And, perhaps more importantly, he kicked a lot of people off the doubters bandwagon.
