David Stern went out amid a chorus of boos and one huge smile.
The NBA commissioner walked to the podium for the last time, going out with style, class and a great deal of humor.
Maybe it's just me, but the boos seemed louder than they've been in the past, as if the fans understood this was their last moment to let Stern have it.
While the level of vitriol might be open to some conjecture, there is no doubt Stern is really enjoyed this draft more than most, smiling and invigorating a rabid bunch in the stands.
Here he is basically telling fans to give him all they have:
And then he reinvigorated the crowd with this explanation to the international crowd:
CBS Sports has our back on a direct quote that rules the day:
"We've had to explain to our international audience that the boo is an American sign of respect." -David Stern being David Stern. #NBADraft— CBSSports.com (@CBSSports) June 28, 2013
I'm not the only one to notice Stern's epic demeanor, because all of Twitter is sounding off on a commissioner who seemed so close to winking with each and every pick.
Troll on, Stern. Troll on.— Dan Wolken (@DanWolken) June 27, 2013
David Stern loves getting booed. He'd make a great heel in the WWE.— Arash Markazi (@ArashMarkazi) June 28, 2013
Waiting for David Stern to tell the crowd he likes Chicago deep-dish pizza more than New York pizza. #NBADraft— Ian Casselberry (@iancass) June 28, 2013
David Stern is retiring from the NBA and joining Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall in the NWO.— Highly Questionable (@HQonESPN) June 28, 2013
Stern continued to savor each and every boo bird blasting him from the cheap seats. He soaked boos up as if they were rays of sunshine on some future trip he might take in retirement.
In fact, I have never seen a man so happy to get booed.
David Stern should do the rest of the draft in a small ABA Nets uniform whilst drinking a Bud tall boy. #middlefingerup— Paul Pabst (@PaulPabst) June 27, 2013
David Stern loves your boos. David Stern absorbs them and turns them into fuel. David Stern: Lord of the Trolls.— Lakers Nation (@LakersNation) June 27, 2013
David Stern is like that guy who put in his two weeks notice, and just started showing up to work in bermuda shorts & flip-flops.— Collin McCollough (@cmccollo) June 28, 2013
See everyone, that's how you troll. Well done David Stern.— World of Isaac (@WorldofIsaac) June 27, 2013
Never seen anyone embrace the world raining hate on them more joyously than David Stern. #nbadraft— samantha bunten (@samanthabunten) June 28, 2013
Who said this draft was bereft of stars?
In his last draft, Stern showed his trademark smirk and gave long pauses before announcing picks, both of which seemed to be a bull's eye for all the fans' boos. So far, the biggest star of the night has been Stern.
We hate to see you go, but darn, we love to see how you call it a career.
