Behind the superb pitching by starting pitcher Edinsion Volquez, and the big day at the plate by Brandon Phillips, the Reds down the Marlins 7-0 and pitch their sixth shutout of the season.
Edinsion Volquez (4-2) pitched eight innings, giving up only three hits while striking out seven with four walks in the shutout. Volquez was in trouble a few times in the game but showed great composure by getting out of trouble.
Brandon Phillips continued to get back on track by going 3-5 with six RBI including a three run monster shot in the top of the seventh to make the score 7-0.
Joey Votto also continued to produce by getting on base all five times up, going 2-2 with a RBI and walking three times. Votto is off to a very hot start with a batting average of .378.
Catcher Ramon Hernandez and Shortstop Jerry Hairston Jr. also added two hits each going 2-4 respectably.
This marks the sixth shutout of the year for Cincy and matches the number of shutouts the Red legs had all season last year.
The Reds are now 14-12 and will head back home to host the Brew Crew as Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (4-1) takes on Brewers starter Manny Parra (0-4) at 7:05 ET Wednesday.
