Until Robson stepped up against Maria Kirilenko, it looked as if Andy Murray was the only British player who would make it through to the second round at this year's Wimbledon. But Robson put a more cheery spin on things with her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Kirilenko, the No. 10 seed. This was unquestionably her best performance of the year. Until some nervy moments in the closing stages, when she tensed up and lost her smooth service motion, she was simply too powerful for her demoralised opponent.
