Andre Schurrle Agrees to 5-Year Deal With Chelsea

It is a move that has been in the works for quite some time, but it is finally official as Chelsea inked 22-year-old attacker Andre Schurrle to a five-year deal on Tuesday and completed his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, according to ChelseaFC.com.

Chelsea agreed to acquire the German up-and-comer on June 13, but it took some time to complete paperwork for the transfer. Now that the contract is signed, Schurrle appears to be excited about the opportunity to play at Stamford Bridge.

"I am so happy now I have signed and it is an honor for me to play for this club, with this team and for these great fans," Schurrle said. "I am really looking forward to it."

While the signing of Schurrle is likely a speculative move for Chelsea's future, he is a player who can step in right away and contribute. Schurrle netted 23 goals in two seasons for Leverkusen, and before that he scored 15 goals in 34 appearances with Mainz 05 of the Bundesliga during the 2010-11 season. That was a club record, according to Daily Mail.

Schurrle didn't come cheap as Chelsea paid £18 million to acquire him, according to Daily Mail's John Edwards, but that could ultimately be a bargain if he pans out as expected.

Schurrle has shown excellent offensive acumen at a young age and at a high level of play, so Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is obviously banking on the notion that Schurrle will continue to develop and eventually become an elite player in the EPL.

Is this a good signing on Chelsea's part?

Playing alongside a dynamite supporting cast at Chelsea will certainly help him in that regard, although it can be viewed as a doubled-edged sword. The Blues have so much talent right now, particularly in Schurrle's forward-thinking role, that his playing time may not be as consistent as it was at Leverkusen, so he'll have to make the most of the time he has out on the pitch.

Chelsea can afford to bring him along slowly and have him learn at his own pace, so it's safe to say that Schurrle is in an ideal situation that could one day pay major dividends for everyone involved.
