United States vs. Spain U-20 World Cup Live Blog: Instant Reactions and Analysis
Another week and another soccer tournament that Spain is favored to win. As the FIFA U-20 World Cup opens today, we will get a chance to see some of our future stars play on the biggest level.
The United States will take on Spain at 2 p.m. ET in what will be the first of three group matches. While the United States are severe underdogs, their recent success at the senior level could motivate them to continue to not only compete, but to win.
For Spain, the U-20 World Cup gives them an opportunity to once again prove that they are the soccer powerhouse. Spain completely dominated the Euro-21 competition and has had continued success with their most recent Confederations Cup win against Tahiti.
FINAL Spain 4 United States 1
Spain and the U.S. played a close game, but Spain was able to capitalize on the American mistakes and a very inexperienced defense.
Would rather US U20s play in tough group like this. Good for growth & to prevent self-satisfied attitude often seen in US youth players.— Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl) June 21, 2013
FINAL Spain 4 United States 1.
Hopefully the United States can turn this game into a positive and end the group stage at the second position.
Thanks for following along.
Spain just killing time right now. This game is as good as over.
5 minutes of stoppage play after the long winded injury for Garcia earlier in the match.
Yellow card for Oceegueda after a tackle from behind. Very dangerous play.
Just 5 minutes left. U.S. still trying to score another right now. Expect a heavy Spanish counter-attack.
As for Spain, I doubt there is a team in competition who can beat them. Spanish football dominance is clear across all ages right now.
Spain is the best team in the tournament, but it won't get much easier because of the "group of death". Still have to play France and Ghana.
GOAL! Spain 4 United States 1
Luis Gil with a phenoenal left foot strike in the top right corner. The U.S. caused the turnover with their high pressure and Gil ended up with the ball right outside the box. Twellman compares the goal to Dempsey's goal against Belgium.
If Jurgen Klinsmann was watching this game at home looking for a defender for the future, he probably turned it off at halftime.
20 minutes left for the U.S. to respond. The win is out of the question at this point, but they should be working for some nice combinations and a possible goal as time runs out. They need something to be happy about in training tomorrow.
The U.S look absolutely exhausted. Too much pressure in the first half. Leading to dumb mistakes, like the Villareal yellow card that was just given. Stupid reaction after he thought he was fouled.
GOAL! Spain 4 United States 0
Cropper comes out to try and stop Deulofeu on a breakaway, but he touches it past the American keeper. Easy pass into the back of the net. The counter attack has been incredibly effective for the Spanish squad. It has been too easy so far.
The U.S. have a great opportunity from right outside the box. Villareal needs a great ball to pu the U.S. back in this game. He absolutely wastes the ball over the net. Not what the U.S. needed.
Garcia walks off under his own power, but Daniel Cuevas will be his substitute.
Garcia is hurt right now for the United Stated. Took a nasty shot to the back of the head by Israel Puerto and he is still not getting up. Puerto was given a yellow card for the challenge. Hopefully Garcia will be alright. He most likely will not stay in the game.
The United States pressure has really changed Spain's tactics. It hasn't really mattered since they have still scored 3 times, but it was a great gameplan by Tab Ramos. the team just couldn't execute.
Good start to the half by the United States. They need to continue their pressure and put a ball in the net!
Second half is underway!
Watching the halftime show, will Balotelli ever miss a PK? Seems impossible right now.
The United States defense needs to step up in the second half. The game was evenly matched, but the high line of the U.S. defense was their downfall. They need to continue pressuring and disallowing Spanish shots. If they can score early, they will have a chance to come back against this experiencedSpanish squad.
The United States played pretty well, but they are clearly outmatched. The talent and experience of the Spanish team is far greater than any player on the United States team.
HALFTIME Spain 3 United States 0
The United States will go into halftime down 3 goals instead of 1. They let in two, could have been 2 if not for a great Cropper save, easy goals in the last minutes of the first half.
GOAL! Spain 3 United States 0
Jese finds the ball about 10 yards away and easily puts the ball away. Head Coach Tab Ramos will not be happy with his team at halftime. Nothing worse for a coach than watching your team let in goals at the beginning and end of each half.
GOAL Spain 2 United States 0
Gerard Deulofeu cruves an absolutely amazing strike t in the upper right corner. Deulofeu has been very dangerous this half and could easily have a few more. Demoralizing goal for Spain as the U.S. has actually held their own for the better part of the half.
Just 2 minutes left in the half.
Right now the Unite States actually has MORE possession than the Spanish squad. Deep throw by Torre. More close throw-ins mean more set pieces for the Americans.
