World Football Idiot of the Week

Newcastle United have pulled off perhaps the most surprising transfer of the summer by appointing 66-year-old Joe Kinnear as their director of football.

According to this Independent report, Kinnear will oversee all of the club’s transfer activity moving forward and be tasked with working closely with Newcastle manager Alan Pardew.

Pardew seems unlikely to be pleased with the new arrangement. After a disappointing 2012-13 season, the last thing he needed was an unsettling change of structure to further undermine his position.

As for Kinnear’s credentials for the role, they’re dubious at best. He’s been away from the game since 2009 and is not exactly a man whose reputation will draw the best young players in the world to St. James’ Park.

It seems like a curious move from Newcastle owner Mike Ashley to me. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
