OAKLAND – The merciful end came with the Yankees infield drawn in and the game's greatest closer on the mound. Mariano Rivera gave up a walkoff single to Athletics infielder Nate Freiman to finish off an Oakland sweep with a 3-2 defeat. After 18 innings, five hours and 35 minutes, this brutal day could end. Rivera replaced Preston Claiborne, who allowed a one-out single. With Rivera on the mound, a bloop floated off the bat of Seth Smith and over the head of Kevin Youkilis. John Jaso took third. He scored on Freiman's hit.
