Ecuador vs. Argentina: World Cup Qualifying Live Score, Highlights, Recap
Ecuador 1-1 Argentina
A Sergio Aguero penalty in the first minute gives Argentina the early lead after Dominguez brought down Palacios in the box.
Segundo Castillo equalised for the hosts with a superb header from a whipped free-kick into the six-yard box.
A moment of madness in the dying moments of the game from Javier Mascherano saw him given a red card after lashing out at a medic.
ECUADOR XI: Dominguez, Paredes, Guagua, Erazo, Ayovi; Valencia, Noboa, Castillo, Montero; Caicedo, Rojas.
ARGENTINA XI: Romero; Peruzzi, Fernandez, Garay, Basanta, Rojo; Banega, Mascherano, Di Maria; Palacio, Agüero.
Time to sign off on a live blog filled with some fantastic football, umpteen corners, penalty appeals and a moment of sheer insanity from Mascherano. Good night!
Also worth mentioning that Colombia have a game in hand, if they win that then they go equal with Argentina on 30 points at the top of the table.
ARG will take that, I'd think, though a lot of their fans won't be very impressed. But the World Cup won't be played at 2,800 metres.— Sam Kelly (@HEGS_com) June 11, 2013
Some relieved Argentina fans out there...
Qualification for the 2014 World Cup will have to wait another gameweek for Argentina as Colombia win 2-0 against Peru to close the gap to three points.
And an act of unbelievable madness from Javier Mascherano will be the talking point after he lashed out at a medic whilst being taken off the pitch on a buggy.
Argentina will be very relieved to escape with a point. They were second best for much of the game. Ecuador exploited the wide pitch and they could and should've taken all three points.
FT - The full-time whistle blows on a rather dull second-half after what was an exhilarating first-half.
90+7' - One last free-kick in dangerous territory for the hosts...and Caicedo very nearly scores! But it's flagged for offside.
90+6' - This could be a very good point for Argentina. They have been battered here.
90+4' - Another corner goes to waste as Ecuador pile on the pressure.
90+3' - Worth mentioning that Messi has been largely anonymous since coming on. Lack of fitness evident.
90+1' - Seven minutes of injury time after the chaos surrounding Mascherano's sending off. Plenty of time for a winner.
90' - Ecuador pushing for a winner now with their extra man advantage.
89' - For the second successive game, Argentina are down to ten men. An act of stupidity from the captain.
88' - Mascherano has in fact been sent off for kicking out at one of the medics who was stretchering him off the pitch!
87' - Ugly scenes here as Mascherano is led off the pitch by his teammates. Not sure what happened there.
84' - Oh my word. Castillo storms into the box but he ends up taking it to the byline after one too many feints. Argentina are hanging by the skin of their teeth.
83' - The chances keep coming! Caicedo gets the ball in the box, turns the defender but his shot is blocked just in time by Fernandez who arrived to help.
82' - Messi races down the other end and a superb solo run isn't matched by the finish as he lashes the shot well wide.
81' - Castillo stings Romero's gloves with a ferocious shot but the rebound is not picked up by a yellow shirt.
80' - Di Maria seems intent on wasting every chance Argentina has. Messi puts him through on sight of goal but the Real Madrid man wants to cut back onto his favoured left and gets the ball nicked off him.
78' - And Argentina really should be 2-1 up. Di Maria is through on goal but gets his shot horribly wrong, Dominguez breathes a sigh of relief.
77' - Valencia overhits a cross intended for Caicedo. He's not been in good form today.
76' - Lucas Biglia comes on for Ever Banega.
73' - Ecuador have had a ridiculous amount of corners today. Very little to show for it though.
