Should Sting ever make his way to WWE, he would be the wrong guy to pit against The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXX or any WrestleMania after that.

At one point, a clash of the two dark personas from rival companies would have been a dream match, but no longer. Dreams that come too late are simply not as desirable.

There have long been rumors about Sting leaving TNA for WWE and, subsequently, for him to battle The Deadman, and those rumors strengthened over the last few days.

WWE.com listed Sting as the best wrestler to never wrestle for the company, saying of him, "Perhaps if there was one person who could have upended The Deadman's WrestleMania Streak, it would be Sting himself."

Speculation on WWE's part is one thing, but a recent interview on VOC Nation Radio Network (via WrestlingInc.com) with Sting furthered the rumors even more. He said, "It's no secret. I've always wanted to wrestle Undertaker; I've said that for years. And who would not want to work WrestleMania?"

Ever since WCW closed its doors in 2001, fans have wondered if the long-time WCW star would work for Vince McMahon's company. He is the biggest star working who hasn't been a part of WWE for at least a single match.

Fan-made promo for a Sting and Undertaker match

While seeing him in a WWE ring would be exciting, it'd be excitement mostly built on nostalgia.

Sting is 54 years old. He is not the same athlete who had great battles with Vader and Ric Flair in the '80s and '90s. He’s not even the same athlete who fought Kurt Angle in an excellent match at TNA Hardcore Justice in 2011.

Fans cling to legends long after the luster is gone. It's difficult to watch our favorite wrestlers' careers come to a close, but eventually, they have to.

Despite the hype a Sting vs. Undertaker match would generate, it would ultimately not live up to our collective expectations. Both men's bodies are fading down the stretch. Both men have given a huge chunk of their lives to this unforgiving industry.

A decade ago, or even five years ago, this match would have turned out far better. If it were to happen today, though, it would be a plodding, limiting affair.

Watch Sting put on the Scorpion Deathlock in this match against Matt Morgan.

His body looks rigid here and he can't bend enough to properly crank the submission on Morgan. In short, he looks like an old man, which shouldn't come as a surprise. The condition of his body and the level of his ability is right in line with his age and the amount of pounding he has taken in his Hall of Fame career.

Undertaker needs an opponent WWE fans can believe is a credible threat to his undefeated streak at WrestleMania. He needs an opponent more established in the WWE world. He needs someone who can carry the pace of the match, much the same way CM Punk did this year.

Sting may have been that man at one time, but he isn't any longer.

The Icon could contribute to WWE even today, but putting him in a WrestleMania match against The Undertaker would be a mistake. All the buzz surrounding it would be dissolved by disappointment.

You can chase the past, but you'll never catch it. Some dream matches just have to stay dreams.
