Breaking Down the Transfer Rumor: Wayne Rooney to Arsenal

Rumors of Wayne Rooney’s departure from Manchester United persist, and one of the many potential destinations is Arsenal. But Rooney, who has won five Premier League titles and scored 197 goals for Manchester United, wouldn’t really leave Old Trafford for a Premier League rival—would he?

The gossip pages seem to think it’s possible. In May the Daily Mail started the rumor, with the Daily Mirror picking it up and adding a price tag soon afterward. More recently, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted to Al Jazeera (via the Guardian) that he would be interested in signing the 27-year-old England international forward.

One problem, though, might be Rooney’s wage demands, as Arsenal’s strict wage structure would seem to rule out a move. So is this rumor solid? Or is it rubbish?
