INDIANAPOLIS —The days of Butler being the ultimate underdog are long gone, pushed to the past like relics of smaller conferences. The Bulldogs men's basketball team is about to start competing in the new Big East, a basketball-centric league hoping to be one of the strongest in the country. In the Butler basketball offices, there are two side-by-side banners titled "Championship Tradition." From 1997 to 2010, there are lots of MCC (Midwestern Collegiate Conference) and Horizon League titles. NCAA tournament appearances are listed, as are the occasional Sweet 16 runs. The years 2010 and 2011 bring national title game runner-up references.
