The Tigers blew open a close game with a four-run sixth inning. Alex Avila's two-out bloop single to left chased Twins starter Mike Pelfrey, and pinch-hitter Avisail Garcia greeted rookie reliever Caleb Thielbar with a three-run triple to deep left center. The Twins went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position, the only hit coming on Jamey Carroll's one-out single in the fifth that scored Pedro Florimon.
