Robert Griffin III looked uninhibited and moved with little to no apprehension when he took the practice field for the first time since suffering a gruesome knee injury in the Washington Redskins' home playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks in January.
He wore a sizable brace on his surgically reconstructed right knee, jogged between drills, executed drops from under center and made quick throws to his receivers.
After his debut session, the next, logical questions center around RG3's timetable to return and when he'll be back to 100 percent.
While it's extremely difficult to pinpoint when Griffin III will be fully healthy, let's speculate on the necessary steps he must take during his lengthy and vital rehabilitation process before he's physically capable of returning to 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year form.
First, here's a rundown of the Redskins' offseason schedule:
- OTAs: May 20, May 22-23, May 28-30, June 3-6.
- Mandatory minicamp: June 11-13.
- Training camp: July 25-Aug. 6, Aug. 10-16
RG3 underwent surgery to repair torn knee ligaments (ACL, LCL) on Jan. 9.
Bleacher Report's Sports Injury Featured Columnist Dave Siebert cited a document compiled by acclaimed orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist Dr. Peter Millett of the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., who wrote "patients should be introduced to agility drills and light running sometime between post-operative weeks 12 and 20."
Griffin III appears to be slightly ahead of schedule in that regard, as his noticeable on-field fluidity came on May 23, which was post-surgery Week 19.
Later Siebert included a snippet from a discussion Bleacher Report's Sports Medicine Lead Writer Will Carroll had with renowned physical therapist Mike Reinold, who said the following: "The thing that you have to remember is that no two surgeries are alike. A lot comes down to how hard the athlete is willing to work before and after the surgery."
Siebert noted that "RG3's unbelievable conditioning prior to the injury also plays a huge role," as Reinhold said, "the better someone goes in, the better someone comes out."
So what's next for the Redskins' franchise quarterback?
According to NFL.com's Albert Breer, RG3 explained:

Following that timeline, he may not be as limited during the team's mandatory minicamp that begins on June 11.
However, there's a chance RG3 will take precautionary measures prior to and during that three-day camp to ensure he's totally comfortable sprinting and cutting by the start of training camp on July 25.
Will RG3 start in Week 1 for the Redskins?
By then, barring any setbacks, Griffin III should be extremely close to 100 percent for training camp, which would be more than six months after his knee surgery.
After his OTA practice, RG3 stated he'd be fine with taking the field in Week 1 without any repetitions during the preseason, and right now, there's no telling how Mike Shanahan and the rest of the Redskins coaching staff will approach Griffin III's participation in the four-game exhibition.
RG3's rehab process must be monitored closely as the June minicamp and training camp will be crucial checkpoints along the way.
Based on all the public information regarding RG3's rapid recovery, he should be available, at the latest, for preseason action and is on schedule to be ready for the regular season.
