Mavericks owner and apparent genius, Mark Cuban, recently asked fans to deliver their finely crafted ideas for new uniforms.
It is going as you would expect.
It all starts with an entry from Cuban at Blog Maverick where he asks fans to come up with their best designs for a new jersey that will be worn by the team starting in the 2015-16 season.
Now before you fire up MS Paint or bust out the crayons, there are some important things to note: this is not a contest with a monetary prize and the Mavericks own anything you post to the blog. Per Blog Maverick:
Who will own your design? The minute you post it, the Mavs will. If you think its horrible that the Mavs own your design. Do not post. If you think its cool that the Mavs could possibly use your design and you will have eternal bragging rights, then post away. If we really like your design and you, I may even throw in some tickets. If we don’t use your design, it will still be here on this site for now and ever more for you to glance longingly at. If your design is close, if not identical to other designs and we pick one of the other designs, for whatever reason, then thats just the way it goes.
If we don’t choose any of the designs, including yours.then we don’t choose any of the designs. That is life in the big city. Move on.
The contest of sorts will continue from now until the end of May, so get cracking. As for the early iterations of the Mavs' new duds, they are as you would expect.
They range from the hilariously horrible to the remarkably refined. Here is just a sample of what is at the comments section of the blog entry.
Here is one special creation I truly hope makes opening night in the league:
We may be able to call off the contest with this one:
One fan was far too ill-equipped to post a picture, so he painted one with words: "I think a logo with a basketball in the background, with a mavericks head over it and the name underneath. I am not sure how to upload a pic on here."
Here is to hoping pencil drawings get the job done:
It's still extremely early, but I will assume the entries will get far more insane as the month proceeds.
There are many in the comments section who are incensed that Cuban would try and get anything for free, much less the team's uniform designs.
Seeing as how he isn't forcing fans to post their pictures, we will wait patiently until a silly debate dissolves into a massive display of awful MS Paint creations.
Get to work, Mavs fans. You have quite a job ahead of you.
