The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Boston Bruins by a 2-1 score in Game 6 of their quarterfinal series to force a series-deciding Game 7 back in Boston on Monday night.
The game was scoreless until the third period, but the Leafs started out-skating and out-hitting the Bruins late in the second period.
In the third period, Nazem Kadri threw a shot at the net and Dion Phaneuf tipped it past Tuukka Rask to make it 1-0 Leafs.
Later in the third period, the Bruins got stuck on the ice after an icing call. Cody Franson let the shot go from the point and Phil Kessel pounced on the loose puck in front of the net, backhanding the puck over an spread-eagle Tuukka Rask for a 2-0 lead.
Milan Lucic broke James Reimer's shut out with 24.5 seconds left in the game, but it wasn't enough for the Bruins.
For the Bruins, this game was all about giving the puck away and losing the 50-50 puck battles. The Bruins had 18 giveaways to the Leafs' 17 giveaways, but the Leafs led the takeaway battle 17-5, being a lot more hungry for the puck.
Game 7 will be Monday night in Boston at 7:30 p.m. ET. The winner moves on to the second round of the playoffs.
Final score: Toronto Maple Leafs 2, Boston Bruins 1.
