Baseball scouting is an inexact science. Just ask Mike Schmidt. Schmidt is a first-ballot Hall of Famer and widely considered the greatest third baseman ever after a career in which he hit 548 home runs and drove in nearly 1,600 runs. But in 1972, he was a just a minor leaguer who struggled at the plate in a brief late-season stint with the Philadelphia Phillies.
