World Football Idiot of the Week

Sunday was meant to be a celebration for Juventus, and for the most part it was. Arturo Vidal scored a second-half penalty and Juventus beat visiting Palermo 1-0 to claim their second straight Serie A title with three matches to spare.

But it wasn’t a perfect day for the newly recrowned Italian champions. Paul Pogba saw to that.

Pogba, a 20-year-old midfielder, was sent off with seven minutes left in the match for spitting at an opponent. For his lapse in reason, he has earned a three-match ban (per ESPN FC), meaning he will miss the rest of the league season.

And it’s been a pretty good season for the youngster. In 27 league appearances (18 as a starter) in his debut season with Juventus, Pogba has scored five goals while completing 83 percent of his passes (viaWhoScored?). At the international level, he made his senior debut in March, playing the full 90 minutes as France defeated Georgia 3-1 in a UEFA World Cup qualifying match.

But as Sunday’s momentary lapse of reason showed, Pogba still has some growing up to do. It won’t hurt his team this time, but we’re naming him our B/R World Football Idiot of the Week for the sheer stupidity of it. After all, he only had to wait seven minutes to get whatever revenge he felt was necessary on his opponent.
