For more than a month, the Yankees defied the natural laws of baseball. Many of their biggest producers out with injuries, they had the second best record in the American League. Much of their offense – more than a third of the RBI – came from Vernon Wells, Travis Hafner and Lyle Overbay, a trio of aging stars being used as stop-gap measures.
