NFL, NFC East, Philadelphia Eagles, DeSean Jackson, 2008 NFL Draft, Preview/Prediction

The Eagles haven't had an outstanding wide receiver since Terrell Owens.  I think they have hesitated after what happened with T.O., but with the receivers coming out of the draft this year, they'd be stupid not to go after one.

Three major talented receivers are coming out this year:  Malcolm Kelly, Limas Sweed, and DeSean Jackson.

Malcolm Kelly is probably going to go to Buffalo if not earlier.  All that is really left is Limas Sweed and DeSean Jackson.  Devin Thomas is available too, but I don't think the Eagles would go there if Sweed and Jackson are still available.

I think Jackson would be better for the Eagles offense and these are my reasons:

1.  Speed

McNabb can still move around in the pocket better than most quarterbacks, but he isn't as good as he used to be.  He's got an arm, so he it's not like he can't throw it deep to somebody.  Jackson could get opener faster with his speed.  Sweed ran a 4.52 while Jackson ran an impressive 4.35.

2.  Returner

Let's face the fact.  The Eagles haven't a good returner for ages.  Jackson is probably the best returner coming out of the draft this year.  They could use Westbrook, but they haven't because they're afraid he'd get injured.

But with Jackson, they wouldn't have to worry about that.

3.  Deep Threat

The Eagles haven't had a deep threat since their Super Bowl year.  Curtis and Brown are good, but when they go deep, they have a tendency of dropped passes.  Jackson can sometimes drop passes due to lack of focus, but he catches more deep balls than not.  The Eagles would have Jackson and maybe Brown go deep, while Smith and Curtis can cover the short passes.  The Eagles were one dimensional when it came to passing last year.  They rarely went for the deep ball.

Jackson would be there go to guy.  I think this guy could be the next T.O with the right quarterback.

If the Eagles drafted him, their offense would be complete.

  1. I think that if DeSean Jackson falls into the Eagles lap, they should jump at the opportunity, but I don't think that he will fall that far, and every mock draft I have seen has him going before the Eagles have a draft pick. But nice job breaking down one of the best receivers in the draft.

  2. Wow, it must really suck for Beagles fans to have been so close for so long, and the to watch the Giants come from nowhere and do what the Beagles couldn't. That window of opportunity is pretty closed.

    1. As for Osi,
If you want to be so excited about your expected win this season... You should get that little Joey Mcantire from the New Kids on The Block. He should be able to play Eli Manning pretty well. All the emotion all the boy drama you need bud...

That window isn't closed son, you barely squeaked past the Cowboys, who numbers wise were the best team in our division. So don't hate, check the facts, keep praying, and maybe you'll get as far as the playoffs again this year.

    2. Oh, that's funny. Perhaps the lamest reply yet seen on the internet.

Yes Maurice, I know it hurts to watch the Giants do what the Beagles teased you with for most of this decade. Let it out son, let it out.

    3. Yo Osi,

First of all the Giants suck and they won a Super Bowl by fluke. Second of all, and I'm sure you'll agree, idiot, to be a Giants fan you have to have a pretty short memory. Remember when, in 2006, The Eagles beat the Giants in the first round of playoffs, or before that, years and years running, when the Giants--if they made the playoffs--could never advance past the first round? However, just talking won't prove my point. Wait until the Eagles play the Giants in the upcoming 2008 season, and mark my words, then we will see which is the better team!

    4. Mikey, when you have three Superbowl wins in the last 22 years you don't need a very long memory. Not like Beagles fans, who have to think back all the way to 1960 to remember what it's like to win it all. Were you even alive then? I wasn't.

Of course I remember Philly's playoff win two seasons ago, the same way I remember the two times the Giants beat Philly in the playoffs (that's right, 2-1 overall vs. the Beagles in the post-season, 1-0 vs. the Skins and 1-0 against the Cowfags). So? How much does that mean right now? Hey, what's that sound I hear? DOINK! I think that was the echo of Akers hitting the upright from 57 yards out! Doh! And the Beagles dropping to 5-8....Doh! No playoffs for you.

  3. Without a doubt Desean is the most talented in the Wide Receiver role, however, how will he match up to professional cornerbacks? The eagles need a Wide Receiver who is a red zone threat, as well as a #1 slot position. To break the mold that your #1 receiver should be able to be physically dominant over the cornerback could be a costly decision. I don't know about that being a great thing for the team.

  4. The Eagles need to do 2 things this spring:

make a decision on McNabb, and get some offensive weapons. Desean Jackson is a good choice, precisely for the reasons you mentioned.

But when have the Eagles made any sense on draft day?
