Cesar Azpilicueta paid tribute to teammate David Luiz last night (Thursday) following the Brazilian's magnificent strike against FC Basel to help seal Chelsea's 3-1 victory over the Swiss as they advanced to the Europa League final.
Luiz had scored an excellent free-kick in the first leg at St. Jakob-Park, giving the Blues a 2-1 victory with virtually the last kick of the game. But if we thought that was special, the 26-year-old topped that effort with a sublime curling shot from 25 yards at Stamford Bridge, leaving the Basel keeper without a chance.
It was a goal worthy a sealing any victory, especially a win that sees the Blues make their second final in European competition in as many seasons after their 5-2 aggregate score.
“This season, David Luiz has scored some amazing goals,” Azpilicueta said when asked about his teammate’s exploits. “He has the quality to do that, as we see every time.”
It wasn’t just Luiz who Azpilicueta targeted for praise, with the Spaniard also applauding Frank Lampard’s performance on the night.
The Englishman was involved in all three Chelsea goals, and while he didn’t make it onto the scoresheet himself, Azplicueta believes it was still a fine performance from the 34-year-old.
“Lamps is very important for us,” he explained. “He works all the time for the team. When we score goals he is always there.”
Azpilicueta added: “It’s great to be in the final. Benfica is going to be a difficult team [to play against]. We know anything can happen and we’re going to try to win it.”
