NFL Draft 2013 Results: Breaking Down Teams with Most Questionable Classes

One of the keywords at this year's NFL draft was "depth." There was a distinct lack of elite talent at the top of the draft, yes, but this draft was ripe with excellent prospects into the third round.

In a year where impact players can be hard to come by but good players seems to be prevalent, maximizing value and adding playmakers when they're available is key. And I found three teams that I believe failed to do that.

Maybe they reached in the first round. Maybe they failed to focus on a position of need. Maybe they used a premium pick to add a player who wasn't a good fit for the system. Whatever the case may be, the following three teams had questionable draft classes in my opinion.

Dallas Cowboys

Good ol' Jerry Jones.

After trading back to the No. 31 pick with the San Francisco 49ers and picking up a third-round pick in the process, the Cowboys seemed to be doing some savvy business. Then the team promptly used that No. 31 pick to select a center, Travis Frederick, a player I haven't seen on any first-round boards.

Doh!

What confused me even more is that the team then added a tight end, Gavin Escobar, in the second round. He may very well become a good player in this league, but in the first round the Cowboys could have drafted superior tight end prospect Zach Ertz and potentially gotten Frederick with the No. 47 pick.

Needing more help in the trenches, the Cowboys logically selected a wide receiver, Terrance Williams, with the No. 74 pick, a player whom I like but far from a major need in Dallas. I won't knock the Cowboys in the later rounds, as the team added depth in several areas of need, but I thought the team really flubbed its first three picks.

Chicago Bears

The Bears had the biggest reach of the first round, adding guard Kyle Long from Oregon, he of the four starts at the position. With a lot of talented linebackers on the board, including Alec Ogletree, I thought the Bears could have done much better with that pick.

The team addressed the need in the second round with Florida's Jon Bostic at the No. 50 pick, but I think Long or another comparable guard prospect would have been available at that selection. I would have much rather added Ogletree in the first round.

I'll give the Bears this—they continued to focus on linebacker, adding Khaseem Greene in the fourth round. But I really think they could have done better with the first two picks, and with no third-round pick, the Bears better hope a few late-round selections pan out.

Indianapolis Colts

If I were to think of an adjective for this Colts draft, it would be "ho-hum."

One of the primary needs I thought the team needed to address in this draft was at edge rusher, but I'm not sure they did with selection of Bjoern Werner in the first round. I really like Werner as a player, but as a 4-3 defensive end.

The question is, does he fit a 3-4 scheme? I can't see him standing up as a rush linebacker, and I'm not sure he's sturdy enough to play as a 3-4 defensive end. I think UCLA defensive end Datone Jones or Cornellius "Tank" Carradine on the edge would have made a lot more sense.

Beyond that, the Colts did well to add some more picks throughout the draft and add depth to the areas of need such as the offensive line (guard Hugh Thornton, center Khaled Holmes) and secondary (safety John Boyett).

Still, I don't see this draft class making anywhere near the impact of last year's excellent group of players. Even beyond Andrew Luck, the Colts had an excellent draft last year. This season, I think they took a step back.

One Final Note

I have a feeling a lot of people are going to ask why I didn't have the Buffalo Bills on this list, as the EJ Manuel pick was seen by many to be a reach. But honesty, I like this draft for the Bills.

I think the Bills knew Manuel was their guy and did what it took to get him. Did they overpay for him at No. 16? Sure, but he wasn't going to last until they drafted in the second round. I think they did the right thing by taking him when they did.

And they still got excellent value in the second round. Robert Woods is going to be a very productive (if unspectacular) NFL receiver. Linebacker Kiko Alonso has a ton of upside. Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin in the third round was a steal.

And now, without further ado, here are this year's draft results:
