Barring a trade, the Washington Redskins will finally make a pick in the second round tonight as the NFL draft continues at Radio City Music Hall. Let's do some role playing and attempt to get inside the team's head as Round 2 approaches.
Here is what Mike Shanahan and Co. should be thinking right now...
The focus is purely on defensive backs
Four cornerbacks and three safeties are gone, but this draft is so deep when it comes to defensive backs that we're almost guaranteed to have some quality options at both positions when we're on the clock with the 19th pick of the second round.
At safety, Jonathan Cyprien might not get to us, but there's a very good chance D.J. Swearinger and Phillip Thomas drop into our range.
And at corner, there are plenty of options, including Jamar Taylor, Jordan Poyer, David Amerson, Johnthan Banks, Darius Slay, Logan Ryan and Robert Alford. With Dwayne Gratz, Blidi Wreh-Wilson and B.D. Webb potential third-round picks, it's possible we add two impact defensive backs to the roster in one night.
We could have to make a trade in one specific scenario
Cyprien is expected to be drafted early tonight, but what happens if someone jumps in on Swearinger or Thomas earlier than expected? It might be too early to go with Bacarri Rambo or Tony Jefferson, and we can't afford not to grab a safety in the first few rounds, so we'd have to consider trading up ahead of any safety-starved teams slated to pick in that gap.
That's when we can thank Albert Haynesworth. Seriously, it was the Haynesworth trade with New England that fetched us the extra fifth-round pick currently in our possession. If we have to use that as ammunition to move up five or 10 spots in Round 2, then we will.
Forget offensive tackles
At least for now. There was a tackle run in the first round, and we'd be getting bad value at this point. We have three veteran candidates at the right tackle spot, and there are long-term options to be had later in the draft.
We will try to grab a right tackle in the fifth, sixth or seventh round, but it doesn't make a lot of sense for us to go down that road tonight.
