Shrey Predicts: WWE Backlash 2009
Welcome to the very first edition of Shrey Predicts!
Here, I'll be breaking down each match of Backlash 2009, and predicting the outcomes for the same.
After an average WrestleMania (IMO), WWE is trying to make up for it and rejuvenate fan interest by coming up with a lot of gimmick matches for one PPV, in Backlash, with those being the "I Quit match", "Last Man Standing match", "6-man tag w/WWE Championship match!"
The rest of the match card has the ECW Championship match, and 2 grudge matches: CM Punk vs Kane and Chris Jericho vs Ricky Steamboat.
Let's get started.
CM Punk vs Kane
In all likelihood, this match is gonna be the opener at Backlash!
Expect not much. It's gonna be your standard CM Punk-Kane match, with probably a few near falls and a couple of high spots.
The best way to spice things up in this match would be - Vickie Guererro coming out before the match, and announcing that the MITB 'case is on the line.
If that happens, then Kane is gonna win this one.
If not, I go with CM Punk for this one.
ECW Championship: Jack Swagger (c) vs. Christian
This is one match I'm really looking forward to on Sunday!
Jack Swagger and Christian had an AWESOME championship match a couple of months ago on ECW. That match was phenomenal with a lot of near falls, counters, and reversals!
Both superstars would only be upping the tempo in their match at Backlash.
Expect a lot more near falls, counters and reversals, and some high spots in this match, with both Swagger and Christian going on the top rope on more than one occasion!
And my definite pick for this one is "Captain Charisma" Christian winning the ECW Championship!
Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy
An "I Quit" match in the era of WWE TV gone PG!
"I Quit" matches are known to be very brutal and bloody. But I HIGHLY DOUBT that there would be any bloodshed in this match!
It would end up being similar to the first Chavo-Rey "I Quit" match back in 2006, where Chavo hung Rey up under the titantron, and repeatedly whacked a steel chair against Rey's knee.
If they decide to have blood, then mark my words - this can end up being one of the BEST "I Quit" matches ever! We've seen how good a Hardy vs Hardy match can be, with the WM 25 match, and that AWESOME stretcher match on SmackDown!
Expect a lot of insane high spots and innovative offense in this match (remember, Matt's Extreme Twist of Fate on Jeff at WM) with both Matt and Jeff getting their fair share!
Now, with all the rumors of Jeff not renewing his contract yet, I would still expect Jeff to win in a close thrilling finish. That way, Matt's momentum and credibility won't be buried, and Jeff would get his retribution!
Of course, WWE could shock us all with a Matt Hardy win. But I'm picking Jeff Hardy to make Matt utter "I Quit"!
Chris Jericho vs. WWE Hall of Famer Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat
This one is gonna be their blow-off match to end the feud. With Jericho moving to SmackDown and starting a fresh (Thank you, WWE)! I see one of two things happening:
A. A clean win by Chris Jericho in a thrilling finish.
B. Steamboat going berserk and becoming way too much to handle for Chris Jericho, resulting in Jericho disqualifying himself.
More likely than not, I see Jericho winning clean and starting afresh on SmackDown!
Santina on Khali Kiss Cam
Note: You can skip this slide and save 2 minutes of your time!
I shouldn't even be talking about this one!
Oh well, Khali is NOT gonna end up kissing "Santina". Vince just can't let that happen!
World Heavyweight Championship: John Cena(c) vs. Edge (Last Man Standing Match)
Another John Cena vs Edge match.
No, I'm not complaining. Every time these two superstars square off, we get some really really good matches! Who can forget that AWESOME TLC match at Unforgiven 2006!!!
Now, the "Last Man Standing" match is another misfit in the TV-PG era. How can they have a "Last Man Standing" match without brutality and blood?
The answer, simply put, is yes, they can. Remember Randy Orton vs Triple H at No Mercy 2007? That match was phenomenal. Brilliant. Quite easily, one of the best Last Man Standing matches ever!
Now, John Cena and Edge can pull off something as good as that. And if there's blood, then it can be way better!
Expect Edge going psychotic at some point in the match and beating the hell out of Cena. Expect Cena fighting back, but using weapons to a limited level. High Spots. Tables. Chairs. Close-9.5 counts. Announcers' Table!
My pick: John Cena wins.
And then, out of nowhere, out comes CM Punk and cashes in his MITB 'case!
The crowd goes crazy and CM Punk wins his 2nd World Heavyweight Championship!
CM Punk WILL NOT be classified as a Heel immediately. That may happen on the following RAW, or most probably, on SmackDown!
WWE Championship: Triple H, Batista & Shane McMahon vs. Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase Jr. (The Legacy)
If this match doesn't have a HUGE twist or turn, I swear it's gonna be the biggest letdown of the decade!
Randy Orton is hot on the WWE Championship hunt. Red-hot, with all the momentum in the world!
And the rest of Legacy are able allies to Orton, and their association with Orton is like they say, Priceless!
Now, with the WWE teasing an Orton-win in their "3 Count" on WWE.com, I fear that by the end of the night, Orton might not end up leaving Backlash with the WWE Championship.
The biggest letdown would be Triple H retaining the Championship. But that's not likely to happen.
Everyone sees and senses a BIG heel turn by either Shane or Batista, costing Triple H the match. But for all we know, it can be Vince too!
But let's look at the bigger picture, shall we?
I've got this gut feeling that CM Punk is gonna cash in his MITB briefcase against Orton after Orton wins. I absolutely DREAD that.
If not, I see Orton winning. Either a clean win. Or with a heel turn by someone in Triple H's team. Either way, Orton is gonna become WWE Champion tomorrow night!
