There is plenty of buzz surrounding Tavon Austin out of West Virginia heading into the draft, and one of the teams involved is the St. Louis Rams.
The Rams clearly need an offensive weapon for Sam Bradford. With names like Brian Quick and Chris Givens, it’s pretty clear that this team needs a big name at wide receiver.
The rumors have been swirling about Austin going to the Rams for some time. Rumors became even more real when Austin had a private workout with the team in Morgantown around a week ago, according to Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun.
A lot of people firmly believe that Austin is a Top 10 pick, including ESPN’s Adam Schefter, according to a tweet by NFL on ESPN.
Others, including Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believe that the lowest that Austin could go is the No. 16 pick to the Rams.
However, it is doubtful that Austin lasts that long. Many scouts have him as their top-ranked receiver in this year’s draft due to his incredible speed and ability to get yards after the catch. If the Rams really want to grab Austin, they will likely need to trade up.
According to Evan Silva of Rotoworld.com, it appears that there is a lot of talk about the Rams attempting to trade up in order to pick up Austin.
The New York Jets are another team rumored to be looking at closely at Austin. According to Jason La Canfora, the Rams may be waiting to see what the Jets are doing with the No. 9 pick.
Unfortunately for the Rams, it appears that the Jets are just as enamored with the young receiver as they are. According to Daniel Jeremiah, the Jets are really like what they see out of the former Mountaineer.
The draft stock of Austin has skyrocketed over the past few months. After such an amazing NFL combine workout, it’s easy to see why. Whoever picks up Austin will be getting one of the most exciting prospects in recent memory.
The Rams are certainly hoping they’re the ones to snag him.
