FC Basel 1 (Schar, penalty)
Chelsea 2 (Moses, Luiz)
MOTM: Eden Hazard
What about that? Luiz wins the game, Chelsea have two away goals and a 2-1 lead to take back for the second leg in Stamford Bridge.
Basel left it late to mount a real attack, and thought they'd managed to sneak a draw after being awarded a frankly bizarre penalty, but there was one more twist in the tail as, after Terry saw a close-range effort saved, Luiz hit the late free kick winner.
Incredible finish to the game. David Luiz, who should have been shown a straight red card less than 10 minutes ago, curls the free kick low around the wall and into the far bottom corner of the net, with goalkeeper Sommer definitely at fault for not keeping that shot out. Chelsea have regained the lead...and the whistle immediately goes for full time!
Full time whistle!
FC Basel 1 Chelsea 2
Basel 1 Chelsea 2
David Luiz, 90+4 mins
90+3'—Cole races forward down the left and wins his team another corner. Last chance to attack... but Basel head it clear, only for Stocker to take down Moses on the edge of the box. Luiz will take the free kick and it'll be about the last opportunity for Chelsea.
90+1'—Chelsea have a corner which Oscar wins down the right side. Mata will take it...and WHAT A SAVE! Ivanovic goes back across goal and Terry, two yards out, runs in like a battering ram to power a header at goal—and Sommer performs heroics to somehow make a reaction save and beat the ball out. Top stop.
Four minutes added on
89'—Moses races forward down the left and is taken out by a double foul by Basel defenders. Schar is booked, but Mata curls the free kick wide of goal. Relentless pace at the end of this game after a very tepid first 85 minutes.
88'—Chelsea ALMOST RE-TAKE THE LEAD! A driving run ends in a cross from Mata, the keeper spills it, Torres can't angle himself for a shot and then Oscar wallops the rebound wide from close range.
Basel are improbably level, as Schar smacks the penalty straight down the centre to level matters up.
Basel 1 Chelsea 1
Fabian Schar, penalty, 87 mins
A corner wasn't cleared properly by Chelsea and as Stocker heads the ball back across goal Azpilicueta goes in for a tackle, seems to win and clear the ball—but the ref signals a spot-kick! Madness from the referee in this second half.
PENALTY TO BASEL!
83'—All kinds of horribleness. David Luiz goes studs-up into a tackle on Philipp Degen and should definitely be shown a straight red card. He's only booked, but it was reckless, high and very dangerous. Moments earlier there was a penalty area scramble but no Basel attacker could find room for a shot. They're running short of time now for an equaliser.
80'—David Degen is quickly into the thick of things as he is booked for taking down Mata on the edge of the area. Dangerous chance to cross the ball into the box...but Ivanovic, coming in on the back post, can only stab wide of goal.
Basel sub: David Degen on for Salah
77'—Luiz loses possession in midfield and suddenly Salah is in down the right—but Cech has a great starting position and is off his line in a flash to prevent any shooting chance.
76'—We're into the final 15 minutes now and still Basel trail at home by 1-0 against Chelsea, who will be very happy with their night's work if the score remains the same, even if they could perhaps have risked a little more to try and close the game out entirely.
73'—CHANCE! And maybe the best attacking move of the game from Basel. Zoua nips infield and lays it off for Diaz, who gets too easily past Frank Lampard, but his shot doesn't curl quite enough and runs wide of Cech's post.
72'—Mata immediately involved to create a chance as he frees Moses, who in turn tees up Torres for an easy-seeming finish—but the keeper saves it, and Moses was offside anyway.
70'—Referee now books Dragovic for a challenge on Torres which he cleanly won the ball in, and Dragovic will also miss the second leg. The crowd are vociferously unhappy.
Chelsea sub: Juan Mata on for Eden Hazard
He'll now miss the second leg of the semifinal as a result of that booking.
68'—Ashley Cole is shown a yellow card, apparently for time wasting over a throw-in. Bit harsh?!
67'—Frei gets forward to shoot from long range, but it's swerving away from goal all the time and Cech isn't particularly worried.
