After reading some of Ron's great "Evolution" slideshows I looked back to the era when wrestling was edgy, gimmicky and controversial. The Attitude Era.
There were not many superstars who were as edgy and controversial as Sean Waltman as well as a great gimmick: A rebellious up and comer who never listened to "da man."
I firmly believe the man I grew up admiring and acting as is a solid contender for a Hall of Famer and here is why...
Sean Waltman debuted in WWF as a jobber under many different names, my personal favourite being Kamakaze Kid, but his career truly started on May 17, 1993, on an episode of Raw which I have watched over and over again, The 1-2-3 Kid picked up an underdog's win over Razor Ramon who was a huge star at the time.
Ted DiBiase Sr used this to his advantage during a feud with Razor Ramon by taunting Razor for being defeated by a nobody.
1-2-3 Kid then pulled off another huge upset by defeating the Million Dollar Man. Waltman became a fan favourite with constant "1-2-3" chants from the crowd.
The 1-2-3 Kid turned heel after helping then heel Psycho Sid defeat face Razor Ramon as the special referee. He went on to join Ted DiBiase's Million Dollar Corp. where he got his hands on his first gold in WWE.
The first coming when he won the tag titles with HBK's former mentor Marty Jannetty. He then went on to have another tag titles run, this time with Hardcore Holly, then known as Bob Holly.
In an epic match he came up short in a WWF Championship match with Bret Hart. Hart was quoted as saying "If that kid stays put he could win this belt off me some day."
Unfortunately for WWF, like so many of their superstars did, The Kid jumped ships to a higher paid contract in WCW.
He appeared at ringside during an episode of Nitro and pressed a button which lead to NWO posters, t-shirts and other NWO propaganda to fall from the rafters to the crowd below revealing himself as the newest member of NWO.
Now known as Syxxx he won his first and only piece of WCW Gold after winning the Cruiserweight Champion from Dean Malenko.
He lost the title to Chris Jericho before a career-threatening neck injury putting him out of action for months.
During his absence he was fired by Eric Bischoff, when legitimately questioned about his dismissal by Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, Hulk Hogan answered "Sean simply could not cut the mustard in WCW."
The night after Wrestlemania 14 Triple H marched out to the ring and declared he was starting an army of Degenerates, an army of scumbags, an army of rebels.
He went on to give a famous speech, "When you start and army, you look to your blood, you look to your buddies, you look to your friends, you look to...the Kliq" then a scruffy haired, dangerous looking guy appeared on stage to D-X's music, this was my first sight of X-Pac.
Immediately, X-Pac cut a promo on WCW, Hogan and Bischoff and claimed Hall and Nash had tried to get out of their contract to join WWF.
This was the beginning of wrestlers jumping from WCW to WWF rather than a one way system, many believe this is the foundation of WCW failing.
Soon after his return to WWE he captured the European Championship from D-LO Brown.
The two exchanged the title a few times through 1998/99 as well as feuding with Jeff Jarret, defeating him in a hair vs. hair match.
X-Pac then dropped the title to Shane O'Mac but won himself a rematch at Wrestlemania 15, X-Pac seemed set to win on the biggest stage in Pro Wrestling but his "buddy" Triple H turned on him, helping future brother in law Shane to defeat X-Pac.
This led to X-Pac and best friend Road Dogg to turn away from Billy Gunn, HHH and Chyna. While Road Dogg was out of action, X-Pac saw life in a mutant, a vile monster.
Up until then Kane was a meniachal monster who enjoyed destroying lives. Kane's girlfriend Tori looked for some help in trying to make Kane "human." She turned to X-Pac.
With the help of X-Pac, Kane became more human and learned how to feel. X-Pac and Kane went on to win two tag titles after which X-Pac told Kane D-X were forming and Kane was welcome to join them.
X-Pac continued to make Kane think he was going to be accepted for the first time in his life but he had a shocking secret to reveal.
X-Pac and Road Dogg gave Kane a beat down and X-Pac revealed Tori was in fact his new girlfriend and she had left Kane.
X-Pac then went on a villainous streak while teaming with Road Dogg to win more Tag Team titles but his main feud was with Kane, including an epic match singles match which ended up in Kane being put into an Ambulance by D-X.
The feud also included a cage match between X-Pac and Kane which X-Pac impressively won although the feud ended in a squash match at WM 2000 when Kane and Rikishi (almost literally) squashed X-Pac and Road Dogg, X-Pac and Road Dogg went on to feud with Dudley Boyz but eventually split when X-Pac was injured again.
X-Pac's return to WWF was cut short because he found himself without an angle, he then created a flop stable called X-Factor with Justin Credible and Albert.
Although Waltman was clearly on a downward spiral he then went on to pull off an amazing feat successfully winning both the WWF Lightheavyweight Championship and the WCW Cruiserweight title during the Invasion giving WWF an advantage and becoming the only person to ever hold both titles.
He was the last person to hold the Lightheavyweight Championship and lost the Cruiserweight Championship due to injury.
X-Pac then joined the NWO and feuded with Hogan surprisingly going toe to toe with a legend before the storyline being dropped.
Sean Waltman was released by WWE after collapsing in an airport. Since then he has had successful stints in TNA, NWA and Wrestling Society X.
I personally believe that Sean Waltman is a candidate for a future HOF'er but what do you guys think?
