MOTM: Alex McCarthy
And that's it—Reading have held on and claimed the unlikeliest of points, largely thanks to a superhuman effort from Alex McCarthy in the home team's goal.
Reading's own chances were few and far between, with Pepe Reina saving well from Noel Hunt with the best of them, but at the other end of the pitch it was a constant procession of wonderful match-winning chances for Liverpool, all of which were spurned or saved.
Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho were the biggest victims, but centre-back pairing Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher, and midfielder Jordan Henderson, all went close in the first half.
Ultimately it is another massively frustrating draw for the Reds—and a fine point at home for the Royals, but one which probably isn't enough to help them significantly in their bid to avoid relegation.
Reading 0 Liverpool 0
90+3'—Gerrard from 30 yards—saved. Suarez on the rebound—blocked.
90+2'—Reading break, McAnuff kicks Carragher and looks for the penalty. Nothing doing. Final 90 seconds.
90+1'—Suarez rolls his man, bursts into the area and cracks in another shot with the outside of his boot—no surprise, McCarthy dives to his right and palms it away. What a performance.
Four minutes to be added on.
90'—This is just getting beyond silly for Liverpool now. A long, high ball reaches Suarez but he dummies it to let it run on to Sturridge, and he wallops his shot over from inside the box.
89'—Last minute of normal time. Coutinho is fouled and Liverpool have a free kick, but Reading clear quickly. How long to be added on?
87'—Reading are digging in for a point here now. Liverpool throwing everything at it, but simply unable to put the ball in the net. So hugely frustrating for Brendan Rodgers and his men. Jose Enrique is booked for a silly foul.
84'—RIDICULOUS GOALKEEPING. Unreal. Another top, top pair of saves. Gerrard leathers a shot from in the area and McCarthy tips it over on the stretch. Then Sturridge knocks it down for Suarez and, only 10 yards out, he simply blasts it—and McCarthy apparently has ball-magnets in his gloves as he dives, an not just saves, but catches the ball. Incredible.
83'—Downing's turn this time—but his shot is wide of the near post. He gets the ball from Sturridge and pulls his shot instead of curling across goal, but yet again the Reds fail to hit the target.
81'—Suarez skips past two tackles on the edge of the box and drills in a low left-footed shot, but it's not hard enough to trouble McCarthy, who gets down to make a simple save.
80'—Into the last 10 minutes. Gerrard trying to push the Reds forward again in search of a late winner here against the league's bottom side.
78'—JUST WIDE! Suarez curls a magnificent effort toward the far post and it clips the outside of the woodwork, with the keeper beaten. Liverpool still can't score.
Reading sub: Adam Le Fondre on for Noel Hunt
77'—Carrico scythes down Luis Suarez, left of centre and about 25 yards from goal. Might be slightly far out for a shot, but Suarez looks like lining it up anyway.
76'—TIPPED OVER! A cross bounces through to McAnuff who turns, sees his shot deflected by Johnson—and up over Reina, who has to stretch and tip the ball over!
Same again, as Carragher heads clear.
75'—Another free kick for Reading, and with 15 minutes remaining they'll be desperate to deliver a quality ball here. Guthrie hasn't done that today too often.
73'—Reading sub: Nick Blackman on for Pavel Pogrebnyak
71'—How many chances do they need? Sturridge drills a low cross to Coutinho who has to shoot first time, and whacks the ball wildly wide.
69'—Moving into the last 20 minutes. Surely this game cannot end goalless? Who can find the finishing touch that so many great chances have deserved?
67'—Reading go close again! Reina misses a punch, Agger clears with a header as two forwards lurk, and then the shot from the edge of the area by McAnuff is blocked with another firm header.
65'—GREAT SAVE! One of the best saves of the game, and this time it is Pepe Reina called into rare action. A cross from the left finds Hunt in the six yard box and he shoots first time and low, on the slide, but Reina is quickly down to save the ball with a great stop. Still 0-0.
Goals, goals, goals. Just not here in this game. Norwich lead Arsenal 1-0, Villa lead Fulham 1-0, Southampton one up on West Ham and Everton 2-0 up on QPR.
