Basel—Switzerland

FC Basel 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur (aggregate 4-4, Basel progress in away goals)

Basel progressed to the UEFA Europa League semifinals to face either Chelsea, Benfica or Fenerbahce. Tottenham travel home deserved losers.

The hosts controlled the game throughout despite Clint Dempsey's early opener, and Mohamed Salah's immediate reply was a crisp toe-poke if there ever was one.

Aleksandar Dragovic put the home side ahead after the break in the aftermath of a corner, but Dempsey struck again late in the second half after woeful marking from a set piece.

Jan Vertongen's red card put the visitors in a bad situation, but negotiated 30 minutes of extra time with 10 and forced penalties.

In the shootout only Gylfi Sigurdsson scored for Spurs while all four of Basel's takers netted. Emmanuel Adebayor and Tom Huddlestone the culprits.
