Report: Manchester United Splash the Cash to Land Radamel Falcao

Manchester United have emerged as shock candidates to land Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao.
Reports in many of this morning's English newspapers (Metro, for example) are carrying a story from Spanish publication Marca suggesting the Red Devils have agreed a deal in principle to bring the Colombian to Old Trafford this summer.
However, Marca claim the Premier League champions elect have acted first by paying a down payment to secure the former Porto man's services.
United appear to have smooth relations with Atletico after signing David De Gea from them in 2011, and Marca say sources close to both clubs suggest an agreement is imminent.
No figures have been quoted so far, but past speculation claim Chelsea had also agreed terms with Los Rojiblancos over a £47 million switch.
However, transfer news regarding Manchester United has proven to be premature on a number of occasions.
Just last month the Daily Express ran a piece suggesting United had also tied up a deal for Benfica's Argentine defender, Ezequiel Garay, but nothing has come to pass since.
Who would you prefer at Old Trafford next season?
From the outset, it doesn't appear that replenishing his striking stocks would be a priority for Sir Alex Ferguson, but few sides would fail to be improved by a player who has struck 136 times in 167 appearances for Porto and Atletico over the past four seasons.
If a move for Falcao was commissioned, it would also only intensify talk that Wayne Rooney could be on his way out of Old Trafford.
The England striker has had an indifferent season on the field, and his performance in Monday's Manchester derby was another in which the 28-year-old failed to shine on the big occasion.
Personally I would be surprised if this is anything other than a Marca splash to ramp up their own reputation, but with United recently announcing a new £150 million sponsorship deal, they will have cash to burn to sign the right players to retain their Premier League crown and have a renewed run on next season's Champions League.
What do you think? Are Marca just stirring it again or would Manchester United make a move for Falcao?
If he does sign, will Wayne Rooney be off? Out of the two, who would you prefer to be lining up for the Red Devils next term?
