UFC on Fuel 9: Live Reaction for Every Fight

    UFC on Fuel 9 emanated from Stockholm, Sweden with a main event between Gegard Mousasi and Ilir Latifi. It wasn't the most exciting main event, but Mousasi got the win in his UFC debut.

    In the co-main event Ross Pearson took care of Ryan Couture and picked up his second consecutive win.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Ilir Latifi

    Mousasi is stalking Latifi. Latifi is cautious not to throw anything too risky right now. Latifi shoots, but it's defended well. Mousasi has Latifi pressed against the fence, but they break. Jab lands by Mousasi. Another good jab. Latifi just misses with a right. A left lands from Latifi. Mousasi is very relaxed. Mousasi starting to get more comfortable. Mousasi landing jab after jab.

    Stiff jab by Mousasi. Latifi lands a left. Latifi lands a nice right. Mousasi walking Latifi down and peppering him with the jab. Latifi goes for a takedown, but it's stuffed. More jabs.

    Latifi lands a solid leg kick. Latifi tries a wheel kick. Good combination from Mousasi. Latifi lands a right. Mousasi is still in control with his jab. Latifi catches a kick and puts Mousasi on his back. Mousasi is completely calm and fine.

    It was an efficient but boring performance. This did no favors for Mousasi, at all.

Ross Pearson vs. Ryan Couture

    Round 1

    Couture shoots in, doesn't complete it, but forces Pearson against the fence. Couture is grinding on Pearson early. That is a smart strategy. Couture finally gets the takedown, but Pearson pops back up. Couture keeps the pressure on. They separate. Pearson continues to come forward. Pearson throws a knee, but Couture grabs him and pushes him against the cage. Pearson with a solid knee and left.

    Nice right by Pearson. He is landing with more frequency. Couture gets a hold of Pearson briefly and grazes him with a knee. Couture clinches with Pearson against the fence. Pearson gets off the fence. Pearson catches Couture with a right. Couture's movement is frustrating Pearson. Pearson hurts Couture and finishes on the ground.

    Couture did a good job early on, but Pearson started to find his range and it was only a matter of time. He waited for his opportunities and finally caught Couture flush. Once he was hurt it was a wrap. Pearson with another solid win as he is 2-0 in his return to the lightweight division.

Matt Mitrione vs. Phil De Fries

    Round 1

    De Fries goes for a takedown right away, but it's easily defended. Mitrione shuts his lights off. Over.

    That was quick and easy. And expected.

Brad Pickett vs. Mike Easton

    Round 1

    Easton trying for a takedown. Easton has Pickett's back against the fence. Easton is working hard, but Pickett is doing well to avoid being put down. Amazing takedown defense from Pickett. Good elbow from Pickett. They get back to fighting at a distance. Nice jab from Pickett. Pickett is searching for an uppercut, but it's not landing yet. Easton shoots in and takes Pickett down. Pickett is back up, and he gets a takedown of his own.

    Easton lands a clean right at the beginning of the round. Easton throws Pickett aside. Nice left hook from Easton. Good exchanges to open the round, but it is Easton who is getting the better of them. Pickett lands a jab. Pickett goes under and lands a takedown. Easton is back up. Easton lands a knee from the clinch. Easton with the takedown. He passes to half-guard. Pickett and Easton are back to their feet. Solid round of action. Pickett turning it on, but he is missing with the combinations. Excellent finish to the round.

    Good hook by Easton. Spinning back kick grazes Pickett. Easton takes Pickett down, and a great scramble occurs with Pickett getting to top position. Pickett goes to half-guard. Easton gives up his back in order to stand. Amazing ground work by both men. Fun fight. Back to their feet they go. Less than 30 seconds to go. Easton connects. They swing to the finish.

    Fight of the night. Fantastic, competitive, and technical. Great work on the feet and on the mat. If you did not catch this fight live I can't recommend it enough.

Diego Brandao vs. Pablo Garza

    Round 1

    Brandao lands a strong leg kick. Brandao is waiting on his moments to explode and get inside. Garza's length will pose a problem for Brandao's striking. Brandao gets a hold of Garza and puts him on his back. Brandao moves to side control. Brandao looks solid early on. Arm triangle attempt. He moves over and it's a wrap.

    This is easily the best performance we have seen from Brandao. He was patient and dominant. Beautiful all-around performance.

Akira Corassani vs. Robbie Peralta

    Round 1

    Corassani tries to get things going with leg kicks. Peralta is content to counter here in the early stages. Peralta sneaks in an uppercut during an exchange. They are clinched against the fence now. Corassani throws a kick that is caught. Corassani lands a right. Peralta clinches again. Not a lot of offense is connecting.

    Corassani catches a kick. Peralta takes a big swing, but he uses it to close the distance and try for a takedown. Corassani defending the attempt. Peralta lands on Corassani. Peralta rocks Corassani! Peralta is trying to finish, but Corassani is keeping tight and recovering. Corassani is now pressing Peralta against the fence. Corassani lands a big right on Peralta.

    They are starting to open up a lot more now after they both landed in the previous round. Peralta lands a right hand over the top. Corassani gets a takedown. Peralta gets to his feet, but Corassani gets his back. Corassani puts Peralta back down. Peralta trying to get back to his feet. Corassani staying tight. Peralta reverses position and throws some knees to Corassani's thighs. Corassani going for another takedown, but Peralta defends. Peralta falls throwing a knee and Corassani ends up on top. He will end the fight in top position.

    This is the best we have seen Corassani inside the Octagon. Outside of getting clipped by Peralta he was winning the rest of the fight. Good work on his feet, and with his takedowns. A solid win.

Reza Madadi vs. Michael Johnson

    Round 1

    These two can't wait to get things going. Johnson lands a kick. Madadi takes a big swing, but comes up empty. Johnson with a combination. Madadi tries for a single, but Johnson defends. Madadi trips Johnson down. Madadi goes for a leglock. Johnson sweeps. Madadi goes for an omaplata, and tries to sweep with it but Johnson stays on top. Johnson has not been able to use much offense on the ground. Johnson rocked Madadi on his way up! Big kick hurt Madadi.

    Johnson senses the finish after nearly ending the fight in the first. Madadi slips under a punch and gets Johnson down. Madadi mounts! Good elbows from the top. Madadi tries for a triangle from the top, but Johnson spins out of it. Madadi in side control. Johnson uses the cage to scramble to his feet. Madadi gets another takedown. Johnson threatens with a triangle, but that allows Madadi to nearly move to side control. Madadi rides out the rest of the round from top.

    Madadi immediately gets Johnson to the ground. Good scramble on the mat, but it is Madadi who ends on top. Madadi goes for an anaconda choke. He taps!

    Madadi survived the end of the first round and completely dominated Johnson the rest of the way. Johnson could not stop the takedowns. Madadi with a great come from behind performance that ends with a finish.

Tor Troeng vs. Adam Cella

    Round 1

    Cella opens up with a combination and finishes with a kick. Troeng gets a takedown. Troeng moves to half-guard after some ground and pound. Troeng to side control. Troeng nearly mounts, but Cella defends. Cella gives up his back, and Troeng is taking his time. Full back mount by Troeng. Some ground and pound opens up the rear-naked choke, and Troeng picks up the stoppage.

    Troeng dominated this fight on the ground, and Cella is not a UFC caliber fighter.

Chris Spang vs. Adlan Amagov

    Round 1

    They are fighting at a distance, neither man in striking range. Amagov tries a spinning back kick from way outside. Side kick knocks Spang off balance. Nice leg kick from Amagov. Amagov slips on a headkick. Amagov landing nice kicks. The crowd is growing restless with this fight. Amagov scores a takedown right before the horn.

    Amagov gets fancy with his kicks, but they don't connect. Spang begins to come forward, but Amagov lands a high kick and then gets a takedown. Spang pops back up. Amagov gets Spang back down. Spang gets back up, but an inside trip puts him on the canvas away from the cage. Amagov works diligently from inside Spang's guard. The referee stands them up. Spang continues to come forward, but he is not getting off much offense. Amagov goes for a takedown, but Spang defends.

    Spang lands a good uppercut. Spang walking Amagov down, but is not throwing much at all. Nothing from either fighter is finding the mark. Half the round is gone. Amagov shoots in, and gets Spang down briefly. Spang gives up his back in order to stand. Amagov landing strikes to the back of Spang's thighs. He is even throwing head kicks from behind. Amagov with a takedown, and Spang gets right back up.

    Amagov controlled this fight. Spang had very little to offer Amagov for 15 minutes. I can't see Spang getting a second chance in the UFC after that performance.

Marcus Brimage vs. Conor McGregor

    Round 1

    Brimage storms out. They are going at it right away as expected. Brimage lands a right. Great exchange! Brimage lands a couple shots, and McGregor counters. The uppercut rocks Brimage! He's out!

    Wow! McGregor landed flush uppercuts and finished the fight on the ground. You cannot have a better UFC debut than that.

Ben Alloway vs. Ryan LaFlare

    Round 1

    They clinch up and fight for position. LaFlare gets a takedown in to side control. Alloway fights to his knees and then stands. LaFlare working for another takedown, and puts Alloway on his rump. LaFlare gets one hook in. Alloway works back up once again. LaFlare with another bodylock in to a takedown. There has not been anything damaging in this round, but LaFlare has gotten multiple takedowns and had dominant position.

    They clinch again out of the gate. LaFlare gets another takedown. Alloway gets to full guard. LaFlare passes to half-guard. Now he is in side control again. LaFlare working for a front choke, but Alloway avoids it and gets to his feet. LaFlare goes under a punch, but Alloway defends the takedown this time. Nice low kick from LaFlare. Alloway gets a takedown with a minute to go. Good elbow. LaFlare ends the round by getting to his feet and taking Alloway down.

    Alloway whiffs and that allows LaFlare to easily take him down to the mat. LaFlare keeping top control, but Alloway works his way back to guard. They are up on the feet. Alloway goes for a takedown, but winds up on bottom. Alloway gets back up. LaFlare keeps tight on Alloway. Alloway finally stuffs a takedown, and has his back. 90 seconds to work, but LaFlare turns into him and ends up in his guard. Alloway back to his feet. LaFlare keeps up his strong pace all the way to the horn.

    LaFlare defeats Alloway by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

     

    LaFlare did what he needed to do in his UFC debut, and was working non-stop from bell to bell. He wasn't able to do much damage, but all-in-all it was a solid debut for a young fighter. He will continue to grow and could be a fighter to watch in the future.

Michael Kuiper vs. Tom Lawlor

    Round 1

    Lawlor immediately shoots in for a takedown, but Kuiper defends. Lawlor grinding on Kuiper for this takedown. Kuiper showing good takedown defense. Kuiper puts Lawlor down, but Lawlor is right back to trying to take him down. Another takedown by Kuiper. And one more for good measure. Lawlor going for another single, but cannot complete it. Kuiper's defense is too good right now. The referee separates them from the clinch. Lawlor misses on a shot, and Kuiper lands some ground and pound.

    Kuiper lands with a straight. Lawlor pushes forward, but Kuiper easily reverses position. Lawlor jumps a guillotine, but Kuiper is calm. Kuiper taps!

    Lawlor got a good grip, stayed paitient, and got the submission. After a poor first round Lawlor was able to get the win. Good showing.

Papy Abedi vs. Besam Yousef

    Round 1

    The first fight of 51 in the month of April for the UFC is underway.

    Abedi is seemingly looking to counter. Exchange of some low kicks. Yousef connects coming forward, and they clinch. Abedi gets Yousef to the mat and is in Yousef's full guard. Abedi passes to half-guard. Abedi is not landing much, but he is being active enough to keep this fight on the ground. Yousef scrambles to his knees. Abedi with a knee to the body. Yousef hits Abedi with some dirty boxing, but Abedi lands a good knee to the body. Good dirty boxing from Yousef. Another knee to the body from Abedi. Abedi gets a takedown at the horn.

    Body kick by Abedi finds a home. The distance is closed and Yousef gets back to his dirty boxing. This is where he has scored in this fight. Nice exchange from Yousef. Abedi with the takedown. Yousef is trying to stall and get stood back up, but Abedi is able to keep throwing enough to avoid the stand-up. Abedi lands a solid elbow. They are back up, and Yousef sprawls well on that takedown attempt. Yousef scores with an elbow. Abedi has the Thai clinch, and lands a knee to the body. Yousef lands good punches to the midsection.

    Yousef lands a shot as he closes the distance and pushes Abedi to the fence. Abedi with an inside trip to put Yousef on his back. Abedi gets in a good position to throw ground and pound. Yousef working back to half-guard. Yousef gets back to his feet. Yousef gets a takedown of his own. That is big with just under two minutes to go in the fight. The referee stands them up rather quickly. Yousef tags him with a right. Yousef finishing strong.

    This was a close fight. It all came down to how the judges saw the second round. Abedi won the early moments of the round, but Yousef's dirty boxing was much more effective. A solid opening fight.
