Mets general manager Sandy Alderson acquired unproven center fielder Collin Cowgill from Oakland in December for a nondescript minor-league prospect. In February, he invited veteran right fielder Marlon Byrd to spring training as a favor to an unnamed player. That was Alderson’s answer to the critics who said the Mets trotted out the worst outfield in the majors last season. He also passed on acquiring Justin Upton and failed to sign Michael Bourn.
