Two years ago James Franklin credited a relaxing stay at home during spring break for his improved play the final couple weeks of spring practices, when he nudged past Tyler Gabbert in the duel to succeed Tyler's older brother, Blaine. Franklin didn't secure the job outright that spring, but it was his by default a few week later when Gabbert announced he was transferring. Franklin had struggled through the first couple weeks of spring practice in 2011, but a visit home to Texas seemed to lift away the pressure. He got away from football during the break, other than a game of catch with teammate Bud Sasser.
