For the ninth season in a row, the A’s dropped their season opener, breaking the mark they’d held with the 1963-70 Washington Senators and tying the major-league mark held by the 1972-80 Braves and the 1893-1901 New York Giants. The A’s know this drill: Four Opening Nights in a row and five times in the past seven openers, they have had to face Seattle star Felix Hernandez. The former Cy Young winner retired the first 10 batters he faced in the Mariners’ 2-0 win over the A’s at the Coliseum, and he improved to 4-0 lifetime on Opening Day.
