David Alaba scored after just 25 seconds as Bayern Munich burst out of the gate in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Juventus.
The Bianconeri, who spent much of the 90 minutes on the back-foot, test Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer just twice at Allianz Arena while their own Gianluigi Buffon was called into action on 10 occasions.
Bayern missed the net a further 11 times as they pressed for more of an advantage heading into the return fixture, but it took until shortly after the hour-mark for their pressure to pay off.
Mario Mandzukic was slightly offside as Luiz Gustavo drove a low shot toward the far corner, and as Buffon dove to make the save the Croatian was in good position to take the rebound and square it for Thomas Muller, who had a tap-in.
In addition to their two-goal deficit Juventus will also be without midfielder Arturo Vidal and wing-back Stephan Lichtsteiner after both players were booked on Tuesday and will miss the second leg on April 10.
Really excellent performance by Bayern. 2-0 was the least they deserved after battering an unusually timid Juve.— Swiss Ramble (@SwissRamble) April 2, 2013
Bayern will be heavy favorites ahead of the return leg, especially with Vidal and Lichtsteiner both suspended.
One last time, Thomas Muller's second-half goal to make it 2-0 Bayern.
FULL TIME: Bayern Munich 2-0 Juventus.
90+2' Shaqiri replaces Ribery for Bayern Munich. Both Mandzukic and Ribery get standing ovations.
Probably Mandzukic's most important, if not best, performance in a Bayern kit.Deserving standing ovation.— Cristian Nyari (@Cnyari) April 2, 2013
Didn't find the back of the net but was outstanding.
There will be three minutes of added time.
90' Buffon with an incredible stop to keep it 2-0, and Bayern take off Mandzukic for Mario Gomez.
89' Ribery and Robben (Robbery) combine but Buffon covers up the ball. Offside anyway, I believe.
How much is it a coincidence that the worst Pirlo game coincide with worst Conte's Juve game?— Tancredi Palmeri (@tancredipalmeri) April 2, 2013
Should have gone with his 3-4-1-1 idea in the first half. That said, I'm not sure they would have created anything more going forward with those tactics, either.
84' Vidal fouls Ribery and is getting another telling-off from Clattenburg. Shocking that Vidal is still on the pitch.
82' YELLOW CARD to Luiz Gustavo for simulation. Bit of a poor call, that, from Clattenburg.
In the other match, Ibrahimovic has equalized for PSG. And it was very much offside.
76' YELLOW CARD to Lichtsteiner for simulation! He spun through the air as Dante came in for a challenge and will miss the return leg because of the embellishment.
76' Juventus substitution: Pogba has replaced Peluso.
In case you missed it, here is Muller's goal from earlier in the half.
69' Vidal with a rare chance for Juventus, but Neuer makes the save. Then at the other end Buffon punches Ribery's effort away.
68' YELLOW CARD: Vidal booked for hand-ball (justly), and he'll miss the second leg.
Bad news for Toni Kroos, double muscle tear, could be out for the rest of the season.— Cristian Nyari (@Cnyari) April 2, 2013
Awful news, indeed. Bayern may have the Bundesliga wrapped up, but Kroos has been immense this season and they'd surely have hoped he'd continue to play a part in the Champions League.
65' Double substitution for Juventus: Vucinic has replaced Matri and Giovinco has come on for Quagliarella.
Hint of offside from Mandzukic, who was on the spot for the rebound after Buffon could only direct Luiz Gustavo's shot into his path. The Croatia striker then squared the ball for Muller, who had a tap-in.
GOAL BAYERN!!! Muller!
60' Still 1-0 Bayern Munich thanks to Alaba's goal in the opening seconds. The hosts have continued their search for a second since the restart, and while Juventus haven't offered too many openings they've offered very little going forward. Neuer yet to be tested.
It restarted as finished.Juventus seem to care to protect the 1-0.Surely is Vucinic so ill?Cause would be easy do better than Quagliarella— Tancredi Palmeri (@tancredipalmeri) April 2, 2013
They'd still have to find a way to get him the ball. But yes, after a few days of flu even if he has "recovered" he's likely quite weak.
Robben and Ribery have swapped flanks. Heynckes changing it up a bit in search of a second.
55' Buffon had to be sharp to stop Alaba's free kick from distance.
