In a game that featured 30 combined goals from two hungry offenses, the UNC Tar Heels defeated the Brown Bears by a score of 18-12.
Marcus Holman had himself a day, recording two goals and six assists as the Heels moved to 6-3 on the year. Jimmy Bitter added three goals and three assists while Joey Sankey added four goals and an assist in the win.
The Tar Heels beat previous No. 1 Maryland last Saturday and will face a powerful Hopkins squad this weekend. It was critical that UNC did not overlook the visiting Bears, and it certainly did not. UNC scored the first goal of the game just six seconds into the action, as RG Keenan had a very successful day at the face-off X and the Heels were able to push transition.
Although very powerful of offense, UNC has had inconsistent defense—and that is being kind. Other than a strong performance against Maryland, the defense has struggled against strong competition. In a tough ACC this year, the Heels must clean things up on the defensive end.
For Brown, a long trip to Chapel Hill certainly did not slow down its offense. Freshman Henry Blynn had five goals on the day and will most likely be Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the third time already this season. Nick Piroli got Brown started with a flurry of scoring in the first half, and he finished with four goals on the day.
Despite looking like it was going to get blown out in the second quarter, Brown continued to shoot the ball and dodge aggressively to keep itself somewhat close down the stretch. It was a great game for national TV, as it showed off the new pace-of-play rules and featured 30 goals (many of which were highlight material).
Brown will travel to face Princeton this weekend as the Ivy League heats up. With 4 legitimate contenders in the conference, it will be a close race as we near tournament time.
