At the end of 2012, WWE fans began to think about WrestleMania and what dream matches could come to fruition.
In the early stages of WrestleMania season this year, fans were hoping to see Steve Austin face CM Punk.
A potential Austin and Punk match was fueled by a backstage confrontation between the two in 2011. Punk randomly mentioning Austin during promos, wearing his t-shirt during one of his pipe bombs and the spat they had with each other during a sit-down with Jim Ross continued to fuel that fire.
However, as the road to WrestleMania progressed, the dream of Austin facing Punk at WrestleMania 29 slowly began to fade. That dream was finally laid to rest when it was announced that Punk would be facing Undertaker.
Even though Austin isn't going to compete at WrestleMania, there was still the chance that he might be there.
Well, the man himself took to Twitter to address that issue.
I've had many questions concerning WrestleMania 29. The decision has been made that I will not be at WM29 and that the bottom line.— Steve Austin (@steveaustinBSR) March 21, 2013
I have to say that I am not all that surprised.
Austin had knee surgery this past summer and is coming off the heels of rehabbing that knee. His surgery caused him to miss Raw 1,000. The surgery also cast doubt on whether he would be able to heal, rehab and get into ring shape come time for WrestleMania 29.
Of course this is only going to ignite rumors in regards to Austin and Punk at WrestleMania 30.
I think that it's fair to say that Austin and Punk were not needed this year. If Punk were to fight Austin, it would be them along with Triple H/Brock Lesnar, The Rock/John Cena and whomever WWE put in the ring with Undertaker. It would literally be a four-main-event card.
I am not against a card with that many main events. In the case of Austin, though, there is no need to rush him into the ring if it can be put off a year.
That being said, who knows what the card for WrestleMania 30 will look like.
It's quite possible they will stack that card also. There is also the possibility that WWE wont have as many big part-time names in matches, thus needing a marquee match.
Regardless, I would love to see Punk and Austin at WrestleMania 30.
