When the Big Ten Conference split into two divisions for football, starting with the 2011 season, the University of Wisconsin and Iowa probably sacrificed more than anyone else. UW athletic director Barry Alvarez has said on multiple occasions that he and his counterpart at Iowa, Gary Barta, were the ones who gave up the most, losing an annual rivalry that was important to both fan bases.
