Brett Favre Helped Convince Greg Jennings to Sign with Minnesota Vikings

Green Bay Packers team president Mark Murphy envisions a future with Brett Favre being a long-term member of the Packers family, but reconciling their relationship in the short term just got a lot more difficult.

Wide receiver Greg Jennings, who just left the Packers for the Vikings this offseason, reportedly sought counsel from Favre prior to inking his deal. According to a report from John Holler of Scout.com, Favre spoke with Jennings multiple times and told him everything he wanted to know about the organization:

"Literally, as I got off the plane and (offensive coordinator Bill) Musgrave walked up to me, I’m on the phone with Brett," Jennings said.

I spoke with Brett two or three times throughout this process. He shot me straight. I knew if there was one person that would shoot straight and tell me exactly what I wanted to hear and things I possibly didn't want to hear, it would be Brett. He did that for me.

We don’t know what was said between the two men, but odds are Favre gave Jennings a glowing review of Minnesota. The 29-year-old receiver signed a five-year contract worth up to $47.5 million ($18 million in guarantees) within a day of speaking to the ol' gunslinger.

Though fans in the Greater Wisconsin area aren’t likely to be thrilled about this arrangement, it shouldn’t be a shock that Jennings talked things over with Favre.

Jennings’ situation is not in the least bit dissimilar to Favre’s.

Like Favre, Jennings was once a superstar talent adored by the fans in Green Bay until a slippage in play had fans dreaming of a newer model. In Favre’s case, it was Aaron Rodgers. In Jennings’, it was a bevy of receivers who allowed Green Bay's offense to thrive while he was injured.

Of course, Jennings did not feign retirement like Favre or do anything of the sort. Still, there's no better person to seek out when it comes to making the transition from beloved folk hero to bitter enemy. Jennings asking Favre for advice on the situation—and Favre shooting straight with his former teammate—is only the receiver doing his due diligence.

Nonetheless, it will do little to improve Favre’s reputation as a turncoat in this bitter NFC North rivalry.

Favre himself leaving and taking the Vikings to the precipice of a Super Bowl is one thing. But him helping gift the heated rivals a superstar weapon on the outside? That might just be the last straw for the remaining Cheeseheads who support the former franchise quarterback.
