LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Julius Mays was ready for the bad news by Selection Sunday. Even his University of Kentucky basketball coach, John Calipari, said the Wildcats didn’t have an argument for making the NCAA Tournament after getting blown out by Vanderbilt in the Southeastern Conference quarterfinals. Still, it stung when the official word came that the defending national champion was left out of the dance. “It was hurtful, especially (for) me because this is my last year,” said Mays, a senior who transferred from Wright State in the summer to help UK chase another NCAA title. “I kind of prepared myself for the worst just so it wouldn’t hurt as bad. But it’s still a deep wound and it’s going to haunt me for a while.”
