At WWE WrestleMania 29, Antonio Cesaro will hopefully defend the United States championship, but his challenger is unknown at this point.
Cesaro has had less than impressive challengers thus far since becoming United States champion during the pre-show of SummerSlam 2012. Still, with less than three weeks until WrestleMania 29, there is not a lot of time to build towards a match for Cesaro.
Will WWE decide to have another Battle Royal for the title shot during the pre-show? If so, who has the best chance to win?
Will Cesaro’s challenger be someone who is active on WWE TV right now or a Superstar returning from injury?
These questions will be addressed, and we discuss the top-five challengers for Cesaro’s United States title for WrestleMania 29.
Christian has not been seen on WWE TV in months, making a return at WrestleMania 29 one that fans would be in favor of.
Christian has a history with Antonio Cesaro in terms of a match between the two that occurred shortly before Christian left WWE programming. Captain Charisma handed Cesaro his first singles loss in WWE and could prove to be Cesaro’s greatest challenger thus far.
With only three weeks left until WrestleMania, there is limited time to build to a match between Cesaro and Christian. However, just like prior WWE Night of Champions 2012, WWE could choose to have a pre-show Battle Royal with the winner earning a United States title match later on in the night.
Christian could make his widely anticipated return and win the Battle Royal to earn a match with Cesaro during WrestleMania 29.
R-Truth has recently returned from injury, which occurred at WWE TLC 2012 in a match against United States champion Antonio Cesaro.
It would be quite logical to have R-Truth reignite the feud with Cesaro for payback on the injury Truth sustained.
However, there are a number of issues with R-Truth challenging Cesaro at WrestleMania 29. First, R-Truth wasn’t a credible challenger prior to his injury. No one ever expected him to be the one to defeat Cesaro for the title. Plus, Truth returned on the February 18th edition of Raw to save Kofi Kingston from Damien Sandow. A return to the tag team division is probably a better fit for R-Truth.
Bo Dallas has not been seen on WWE TV in weeks other than a brief cameo on Raw when Kane entered the locker room and attacked Alex Riley while looking for CM Punk.
Dallas had a brief feud with intercontinental champion Wade Barrett, but it was quickly dropped, and Dallas hasn’t been seen much since.
One reason why Dallas’s feud with Barrett was dropped could have been WWE’s reluctance to push a young superstar too soon.
There have been many instances of WWE pushing young stars too soon, and it was great to see WWE hold themselves back from making the same mistake with Bo Dallas. With that said, there has to be a reason why Dallas was the chosen NXT star to appear in the Royal Rumble and begin to feud with Barrett.
WWE must think highly of him, and a WrestleMania appearance, even if it is a loss to Cesaro, would send a message about Dallas: He is part of the future.
The hometown hero of WrestleMania 29, Zack Ryder, is still not scheduled for a match for the event. But if history repeats itself, he will challenge for the United States title.
As discussed earlier, at WWE Night of Champions 2012, there was a Battle Royal for a shot at Cesaro’s United States title. Zack Ryder won that Battle Royal seven months ago, and the excitement would not be any bigger than Ryder winning it again at WrestleMania 29.
Even though a buildup to WrestleMania would be a great idea, having Ryder win another Battle Royal near his hometown of Long Island, N.Y. would be a better idea.
Sin Cara may be the best choice to challenge Antonio Cesaro’s United States title at WrestleMania since the luchador recently defeated Cesaro in a non-title match.
On the March 6th edition of Main Event, Sin Cara scored a surprising victory over Cesaro that could lead to a WrestleMania match between the two.
With Rey Mysterio’s health still in question, it would give Sin Cara a credible match at the show of shows. It was widely expected that Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio would be a tag team for a while that would ultimately lead to a WrestleMania match between the two luchadores.
It remains to be seen if WWE decides to keep Sin Cara as a tag team wrestler or push him to challenge for the United States title at WrestleMania 29.
